Christopher Nolan’s Memento uses the construction of Leonard’s (Guy Pearce) mind to devastate the film’s audience. In doing so, Nolan plays with this audience’s ability to empathize with Leonard’s struggle; a connection forms between Leonard and the audience. For example, the scene where the audience finds out Natalie‘s (Carrie-Anne Moss) manipulating Leonard effectively cripples the audience emotionally. In other words, its f---ing devastating to see him try to remember the horrible things she had said about his wife to no avail. In this shot, Nolan uses an ongoing voiceover of Leonard’s thoughts to form this connection between his thoughts and the audience; the audience begins to feel the Leonard’s desperation to find the ever-elusive pen. Therefore, the audience begins to empathize with Leonard’s condition through Nolan’s ability to provide a connection. Moreover, Nolan uses the sound of the car door closing to reflect the restart of Leonard’s memory effectively closing the door on the opportunity to remember Natalie’s horribleness. In the sense, this scene conveys a element of closure for both Leonard and the audience through its ability to offer a representation of an ended memory; the audience now knows Leonard will never regain this important piece of information regarding Natalie. In the end, Nolan uses a voiceover conveys Leonard’s thoughts to form a connection with the audience, in order to, f---in devastate them.
