on The Cure's Disintegration

Spoiler: Review

The Cure’s eighth studio album Disintegration, released in 1989, marked a return to the gothic rock roots they established earlier in the decade with albums such as Pornography and Faith. While recording the record from November 1988 to February 1989, the band made a tough decision to fire founding member Lol Tolhurst due to his ongoing struggle with drug and alcohol addiction affecting his ability to perform. Although, Tolhurst’s credited on the record it was later confirmed he never performed for Disintegration. On the record, the band blends Robert Smith’s voice filled with hopelessness together with happy almost pop-esque musical backdrops; the juxtaposition of these elements creates a feeling of a man trying so desperately to reach a state of being happy that it drains every emotion from his body. This effect is most evident on the song “Lovesong”, where Smith pours out his soul to a lover, his wife Mary Poole, effectively praising her for allowing him to feel normal over a constant up-tempo beat provided by drummer Boris Williams; he’s so grateful for her ability to allow him to feel normal that he’s apologizing in advance for the future mistakes he knows he’s going to make. In addition, the riffs provided by both bassist Simon Gallup and guitarist Porl Thompson keeps the listener on their toes to avoid the up-tempo drumming from becoming too repetitive. Moreover, Roger O’Donnell’s haunting keyboard on “Lullaby” is mixed with Smith vocals creates extremely creepy and freighting atmosphere. This atmosphere comes right in the middle of the record causing a quick and drastic switch in tone from the songs before and the after; it’s an eerie and depressive risk to take in a middle of Disintegration, however, it works perfectly creating one of the best songs on the whole record. The next song, “Fascination Street”, breaks out of this atmosphere with a two-minute-long mix of guitar riffs and heavy drums causing the tone to become upbeat; this upbeat feeling is killed the moment Smith vocals come through like a fog filled with depression. The juxtaposition created between Smith’s vocals and the upbeat music around them again creates the sense of his struggle with the ability to be happy or normal. An effect partly achieved through how well Smith’s vocals come into the music around them; his voice never feels smothered or cheapened by the instruments surrounding him. In fact, the overall sound quality of this record’s outstanding compared to what I was expecting. Furthermore, the title track, “Disintegration”, again brings the record out of the deeps of sadness caused by, “The Same Deep Water as You”, with a minute and half of O’Donnell’s keyboard and Gallup’s bass. However, the second Smith’s vocals come in the mood immediately switches again creating the before mentioned feeling of struggle. Overall, it’s truly remarkable the impact his voice has on the atmosphere of the record; the sadness within his voice becomes so deafening and inescapable that it strangles the uplifting music around them. In fact, the effect Smith’s depressing vocals has makes this record an absolutely masterpiece through his ability to mimic depression’s destruction of anything remotely happy. In the end, the record’s just a man expressing himself to the point his voice becomes the embodiment of struggle; it creates a confused feeling of something being both heartbreaking and ultimately beautiful.
