    J. Cole had a “good year” releasing that lack luster/forgettable/unremarkable album? Dude sounds like an old man yelling at kids on his lawn on that album. No one wants to hear cole’s libertarian raps either. At least drake is great at making singles. Cole might as well get mediocrity tattoo’d on his body.

But yeah, Pusha prob has album of the year or Vince Staples.

I agree with all this, but again I’m not really talking about the quality of the music itself, the five album run was a big deal regardless of the outcome. I don’t think it’s wrong to say he was the biggest name in rap this year even though the majority of his output s----d.

This is such a bad opinion. Vince’s album was so fun & hypnotic. If you’re not going to parties with “FUN!” blasting out speakers, you’re not living life right.

Were they really though? I love JID...stylistically he’s more unique than Cole...but Cole is more well rounded and pulls off emotional cuts better than anyone (Window Pain, Once An Addict)

KOD packs more of a punch with its social commentary. Plus his features have been A1 all year. He has the best verse on DiCaprio 2 (Off Deez) and arguably on Redemption (OSOM), too.

Just my opinion. We all know you think he’s a standard neoliberal/borderline libertarian snoozefest. And that’s a misunderstanding on your behalf for not comprehending his take on where he thinks tax money should go. It’s not that he doesn’t want to pay taxes...he’s upset where his tax dollars go. Totally understandable point and not a libertarian argument from Cole but you twist it to fit your narrative because your mind is already made up about him.

@Enigma Misfire on Cole sounding like an old man yelling at kids. Constructive criticism and giving advice based on his own life experiences is quite different than an old man unreasonably yelling at kids on his lawn. But like that Charlie Work guy, you guys have made up your minds about Cole and will twist his takes on topics to fit your narrative.

Thinking the wealthy should have autonomy over their tax dollars is borderline-libertarian bs (it breaks the definition of what a tax is quite frankly) and has nothing to do with J Cole's record as a middling artist. That verse is the most entertaining thing he's done all year besides try to say KOD is AOTY.

And I think most people would agree that Dicaprio 2 and Redemption are better than KOD. WPG did.

Bro...he’s not advocating that rich folks control the system and only they have a final say in where tax dollars go. He’s basically saying congress should do better to fund the right things for people (he brings up schools, roads) and everyone should have more of a say of where there tax money goes instead of oligarchs controlling things. That’s a reasonable statement. He thinks that government should represent the people better and tax money should be spent more wisely. If he was defending a libertarian system he wouldn’t want to pay any taxes at all. He wouldn’t want to fund a god d--- thing. He wants the government to spend his and other people’s money in a more reasonable way. That’s what his critique of the tax system boils down to.

And no...music listeners as a whole would probably choose KOD because Cole appeals to a wider range of people. A good chunk of internet forum folks would choose something other than KOD though. Again..a showing of how out of touch you are.

Cole is actually the definition of the idiomatic expression "d---ed if You Do and d---ed If You Don't" personified. Literally. These same people were praising this n-----'s name when The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights dropped. And yes. His album end of his overall musical output/catalog has been more miss than hit, but it's not dud after dud. Sideline Story is mediocre. Born Sinner is meh. His EP's are actually outstanding for EP's.

Forest Hill Drive 2014 was stellar and cohesive. 4 Your Eyez Only was the worst in his catalog besides Sideline Story. K.O.D. kinda redeemed the guy. Did I say he was Top 20 or even Top 50? Nah. But he's really not as bad as anybody on here makes him out to be.

People have their minds made up about someone like J. Cole and Eminem f----- himself with that Kick Off Freestyle. Kamikaze was a great return to form. Those two will always receive the "Cornball Stigma" flack. Whether earned or not, because of past transgressions committed, or not sticking with certain methods throughout their career that drew people to them amid their artistry's infancy.

You could wake up tomorrow with J. Cole being 25 again and just now dropping Friday Night Lights, but everyone would remember the pivotal point when they stopped deeming him listenable. Like the r----- pun on "Jodeci Freestyle". Or just him not sounding or seeming to be as hungry as he was when he was 25 the first time. I still think Em's a clone tho.

I don’t know how else you would describe that album. Songs like “1985” can be summed up as “stop doing drugs, you’re a role model!” & “haha you’re not real rap, you’re gonna phase out.”

Cole wants to be Kendrick/Jay-Z so bad but doesn’t have the accolades or discography to back up that kind reputation. That’s why I just roll my eyes whenever he dives into these super cocky, “I’m better than you/I’m one of the best/imma son you” raps. Dude use to be cool when he took advantage of his cross over appeal (“lights please,” “can I live,” “i get up,” “dreams,” “work out” etc!). Now he’s morphed into some ultra hip-hop head/backpack rapper who tries so hard to please the “real hip-hop” fan base. I entirely blame Nas for this. He ruined J Cole.
