There are really bad parts of Mexico of course but it gets a bad rap and really depends what part of Mexico you are in. You're more likely to get murdered in Saint Louis, Baltimore, or Detroit than you are in Mexico City or Merida. Same as every city there are certain parts you just don't go to unless you're looking for trouble lol.

Obviously there are kidnappings and such but for the most part Cartel dudes don't want to murder you they want to sell you overpriced stepped on cocaine lol

also to be clear, I'm not suggesting that Cartel members aren't dangerous or that you should go looking for them to buy drugs. You should definitely stay away from Mexican drug cartels lol

That's why I avoid visiting places that might be risky for my safety in any way. As for drugs when I was in Madrid in 2017 African migrants were constantly trying to sell me drugs in the district I was staying at and when cop car came to patrol the neighbourhood they immediately dipped lol.

Yeah, of course. I doubt anyone thought otherwise lol. They are scary and I get why people are escaping the country cause of it and the corruption that takes place there, but honestly when all good people are leaving Mexico there would be no-one there to fix it and make it a place to prosper for Mexican people.

Yeah, one of the problems is that the cartels have so much influence with corrupt politicians and corrupt police that a lot of people feel like it's hopeless. Not to mention that the cartels are basically an army.

When I was in Mexico AMLO had just been sworn in as president and people I talked to seemed excited about him though I'm not sure what the general consensus is at this point.

Something I noticed is that Europeans often have different notions of a city being 'safe' than people from the USA. I was just looking at a list of the cities with the top 50 highest murder rates and they're all in North and South America except for a few in South Africa, so it kinda makes sense since cities tend to be more dangerous here (at least going by murder rate).

I was at a laundromat in Mexico City and was talking to this Italian couple who were here cuz the woman was in an art show or something. The man was really worried about the safety of mexico city (in my head I was like bruh we're in a hipsterish neighborhood you're fine lol) and then was raving about how much he loved Tampa, Florida because of how safe it was (and if you've never heard of Tampa, it's a city I've literally never heard anyone say anything about it beyond, like, 'it's fine.' It's one of the most run of the mill medium-sized cities in the country).

We had some mafia violence in mid 90s right after transition from communism to capitalism and mafia was easily established, cause there were no regulations, but now it's no different than any European country when it comes to corruption and criminiality. I would say we have less of the latter than the rest of the countries here.

Yeah man, just was in Oaxaca, stayed for 6 months, the mexican part of my family lives in DF.
It's a shame there's so much corruption in this country and that the economy centralizes in either DF, Campeche or Nuevo Leon.
There's really nothing to fear if you travel the touristy places, except someone might mug you, but it mostly only happens if you go to sketchy places or markets.
The locals generally are very friendly and even point it out if traveling somewhere isn't a good idea. The cartels don't give care about you if you don't start f---ing with them or if you're an important person. Just don't think you can run up to the guy with the AK and Tattooes and just start mocking him, but that should be common sense.
Even after all the savagery that happened with the europeans, especially the spaniards and brits (now americans), the people have been able to maintain their roots to a certain extent. If you travel the rural areas you're still able to see a lot of the ancient indigenous cultures and also people who still live in the old ways and are practicing thousands of years old craftmanship. There's so much knowledge and richness in these cultures that are deeply connected with nature, it's really something one should cherrish if they are able to experience it.
But man... don't get me started on mexican politics... it's a mess... it's been like this since forever. It doesn't matter who's in charge, whether it's Nieto, Calderon or now AMLO, the government is working in the interest of the few.
I mean AMLO been pulling a show since the Morena-Party started, he was in the opposite party before this, the dude is a neoliberalist, but tries to portray himself as a socialist. He's a classic populist playing the same cards as Bolsonaro, Orban, Marine LePen, Salvini, Erdogan and Trump. He's trying to make it seems as if he's the champion of the people, but in reality he's a wolf.
Then there's education, where the government and the CNTE are blocking each other to do any investments or reforms in the system which are desperately needed (I could go deeper into this, but I don't want to bore y'all).
I love Mexico, it's people are humble and kind, it's always fun to be around them, but the government is an oligarchy much like a lot of other places (including so called "developed" countries and "modern western societies")

    Narrative?

If you think that is appropriate behaviour then you have a serious problem.
