Eh I think you're focusing too much on the narrative aspect. Like Thug doesn't hold down a train of thought for too long, but that doesn't make what he says in the moment any less valid. I think it's just part of Thug's trade-off, I'd much rather have spontaneous insanity interweaved with a few surprisingly poignant insights than a more traditional and rigid structure.

    Edit: double post mb

I don't know the song in question. But to me that line means something like; His diamonds speak to other people. Like just by wearing that stuff, people can look and see he's successful in someway. the diamonds "talk" in the sense that Thug doesn't need to say "im successful" because his diamonds do it for him.

I think we all do that of course in regards to having an expectation for what a rap artist should be or sound like. Lemme use my favorite example I use irl with friends and folks (spoilers since I don't want to derail the thread direction)

If you were to read the lyrics out loud you'd be thinking "is he really doing nursery rhymes?" especially on verse two. But kind of what WPG already mentioned context is very important to music, here is a guy who challenged a ton of norms in my hyper-conservative home state of NY and for him to rap like that and sound so charismatic it just makes the whole thing work. Hope this somewhat adds further clarification to our conversation m8.

If Thug starts writing and rapping lines like the ones Drake does, I'll absolutely rip him for it. Wayne is my favorite rapper to ever live, and in my estimation one of the ten or fifteen greatest ever--certainly far better than Drake--but he's gotten so egregious in some ways that I've quite literally stopped listening to new music from him. If you think Thug and Drake are doing the same thing in any regard, I seriously question how you're listening to those rappers.
But...execution is literally all that matters? We're talking about music here, not the SATs. You don't fill out a rubric for a rap song and give it X amount of points if it has an answer partially correct. Things work or they don't work, to varying degrees, and (in theory at least) the function of critics is to dive into a work and figure out how and why things work/don't. You don't have a point here, do you? You're just talking to talk?

Dude, you might have to let this go and take the L here. What I said has nothing to do with Drake's line being a pun or "other forms of wordplay" (what are you even talking about????). Drake's line is cheesy, unfunny, oversold. Thug's is an image that I--and I don't think anyone else--has ever heard or thought of before, and he delivers it in such an unhinged, absurd way. You're acting like I'm splitting hairs here, but in reality they're worlds apart, and even people who like Drake's line more should be able to see that. They're totally dissimilar.

Sorry, is that too jazz history for you?

Sometimes I think it's in the eye of the beholder but I'll give you my perspective on how I sometimes evaluate s--- like this; If you look at a line solely as a combination of words then it's nothing more than plain, thats why theres other details like vocal inflections, the way it was delivered, how it fits into the context of the verse and so on. I don't excuse Thug of everything but he manages to sound compelling that makes those kind of lines work, whereas other rappers can sound monotone or just nothing out of the ordinary. Just my two cents of course.
