    MTY VERY SHALLOW LISTENING

    May 2, 2016
despite my earlier post, i do not disagree that drake's punchlines on this album are especially bad due to execution

like i cant f--- with child's play because of the opening lines on the verse are so f---ing bad

but wayne in his prime and thug have had groanworthy punchlines too, definitely not at the volume that drake has on this album tho

So what in particular makes Thug's random-as-f--- lines work? In context Lil B is trying to be an idiot and is self-aware... so would that give him a pass for a lot of his lines? Like would you highlight his lines as bad ones if you did a review

Honestly being a music critic gives me headaches. Glad I'm not one lol

Are all these factors good enough to praise the lyrical content rather than just the songwriting/execution?

Skippy's point was that the actual lyrics were not good, not the music or how it connects with everything

Rappers that play character like Thug usually have reedeming qualities like technical skill (in terms of writing, before you jump at me), wordplay, background, etc.

I don't see what's wrong with his argument

yeah man I get it. There's just blurry lines when we start using the word "objective" I guess. It's all too grey to be using that word imo. Imma go get some sleep tho it's 2am and I'm exhausted. Got college in the morning :emoji_scream:

This...this post is kind of a mess, lol. Are you (and Skippy, rofl) saying that Thug's lyrics aren't good? Are you saying he's playing a character? Are you saying that he's not technically skilled as a rapper or as a writer? I don't see how you could argue a single one of these points, honestly

I don't know if "bad", I think they are for the most part funny, just not as good as some of you guys are portraying it

People here were agreeing that he was kinda playing a character, not too distant from reality (see for example Cam'ron) but definitely does a lot of s--- on purpose and plays a enigmatic role in Hip Hop

I'm saying he's not technically skilled as a lyricist, Skippy's point was that as far as I'm concerned

    What character is thug playing?

And by what standards are his lyrics "not good?"

More often than not (which itself is a notable accomplishment for someone with as extensive a discog as his) his lyrics are colorful, imaginative, unique etc. a lot of times they're also poignant when he's rapping about family or love.

I don't agree with this notion that thugs lyrics are bad and he just executes them well, and never have

There are too many examples that prove otherwise

He's eccentric and unpredictable which is part of what makes him one of the most exciting writers alive. And his consistency in coming up with unique turns of phrase, imagery, and punchlines makes him one of the best as well

I would love to see an argument to this effect, but I couldn't disagree more

Mate, imagine you create a song about all your exploits/trails and tribualtions in street life commiting illegal g---/drug activity. Now this song you created gets submitted to a police department due to an ongoing "investigation" the police get the song, play it and say "wtf is this guy saying!?" even though he just openly admitted to committing crimes.

Would you say said person is a lyrical genius? Because I would.
