Oct 27, 2022 It's a combination of both, it's not black and white. Mental illness doesn't excuse his actions but it provides some context for them. I know multiple people who were 100% healthy mentally/atheists/left wing/completely cool with gay people. Then they had a bad drug trip (molly in one case, acid in the other) and it brought out latent bipolar/schizophrenia and they all of a sudden became hyper-religious/right wing/hated lgbtq people. It's a real thing that happens, it can change how your brain works. There's a reason he will be silent for months and then all of a sudden be frantically posting crazy s--- and doing insane interviews — cuz it's a cycle of depressive lows and manic highs. It's not just right wing pundits who took advantage of him either, it's music/fashion industry people (including people who aren't rightwing) who sat and watched his mental health deteriorate and didn't care as long as it still made them money. His manic episodes kept him in the news and brought attention to the album drops (at least the 20% of the time when they actually came out). I think he was inching toward some of these views, but mental illness, industry yes-men, and encouragement from pundits exacerbated them.

Oct 27, 2022 It's funny because right-wing people will often correlate things like atheism, individualism, egalitarianism, homosexuality ... with various mental illnesses. And of course, there was a time in America when the opposite of these things -- virulent Christianity, collectivism, racism, and intolerance of sexual deviancy, were the norm. Does that mean America used to be a nation of lunatics, and has become a lot more sane in recent times? From the perspective of modernity, the answer must be yes. But from a more objective point of view I think we would have to admit that the majority dictates what's sane or not, and so there really is no non-circular definition of "mental health". It may be true that a person who chooses not to conform to society's norms is more likely to be diagnosed with all sorts of "mental disorders". But I wonder to what degree these so-called disorders will be owed to ostracism, alienation, and abuse from society, deliberately inflicted on that person as punishment for their non-conformity. Humans are social animals after all, so unless he is exceptionally strong willed, there's no doubt these things will have a profound effect on his "mental health". Take me for example. I'm pretty good at conforming when I have to, but if my reputation as a holocaust denier* here were to follow me into real life, that could be a problem. I might come to be seen as a lunatic by everyone in my social orbit. And who knows? I might come to believe it myself. (*Which I'm not, though I continue to be branded as such and singled out for it by my most relentless haters, especially worm, enigma, and res.)

Oct 27, 2022 For sure — I think there's definitely something to be said about mental illness being over-diagnosed, especially people who conclude that they have ADD or autism from social media etc. My psych actually told me he's been seeing a huge influx of people all of a sudden thinking they have ADD cuz of things they saw on the internet. Which of course, for some people they might legitimately have an ailment and simply had an epiphany because they didn't realize whatever symptoms they had could be indicative of a certain disorder. But others may just be webMDing themselves. It reminds me of this thing I read in a psych class in college where bisexual people were really confused about their sexual identity before "bisexuality" was a well-known concept and thought the only options were gay or straight. Once they learned that bisexuality was a thing, everything clicked. But for stuff like ADD — where's the line? Does someone have an attention disorder because they work better at home alone reading from the book at their own pace than they do listening to a 90 min lecture? I don't have a good answer, it's hard to say unless there's some sort of objective gene, virus, differentiation in the brain/body, etc. that indicates a certain disorder or illness (and idk if there is for ADD, it's tough to objectively measure this stuff). For bipolar for example they've found correlation when it comes to certain structural differences between a bipolar brain and a "normal" brain — I believe the part that affects your inhibition and judgement. Normality in the USA is whatever makes you be a good little worker bee who sits and does their assignments in school or the office without complaining or causing disruption. Mental illness causes disruption. But yeah I didn't mean to assign atheism etc to objective good and christianity objective bad, just to show that their thinking and views completely changed. I'm sure it could happen the opposite direction too.
