Jan 8, 2015 In today's world, it feels like you need to be a musician first and a rapper second. We have more rappers self producing, singing, switching voices, and relying on engineering for their unique sound than ever. Is this progress? Do you even agree with my premise?

Again this is just my opinion but dudes who focus on just rapping and don't care about production or artistry are for the most part basically lyrical miracle type n----s that only fuckboys enjoy And @Koolo ah ok I misread ur post its all good
Jan 8, 2015 Rap is an art form. And the beat/production is half of that art form. But I personally put being lyrical over the beat. I will not listen to any rapper who relys on a catchy beat and/or chorus to be successful. but on the flipside of that, you could be the most lyrical MFer in the world. but if you aint got the beat/production value to go with it, you got nothing and I wont listen to you. Dont know if that answers your question or not, thats just my perspective
Jan 9, 2015 I'll take a great rapper over a half-assed multi-tasker any day of the week. If a rapper can do other things, yeah that's a plus but it's not necessarily a requirement. A lot of rappers become producers out of necessity more than anything else. In general, I don't care for crooning rappers. I do give props to rappers who go into acting (assuming they're good) or other ventures (ie, Action Bronson's "f--- That's Delicious" series).

Jan 9, 2015 Rapping isn't enough for me. You have to sound different. Your sound has to be unique and in a way that is good. I don't know how else to put it.
Jan 9, 2015 Rapping is enough. Providing ad-libs or changes to voice or harmonizing on a hook doesn't necessarily mean it's not still just rapping. They can have engineers, features and whoever else do that for them as well. I listen to plenty rappers who don't sing, produce or do anything out of the ordinary and I'm satisfied. Jeezy, Mick Jenkins, Ace Hood just a few to come to mind. But I do enjoy a versatile artist when it's done right. J. Cole (of course) and Chaz French come to mind.

Jan 9, 2015 Nah. If you got a good ear for beats and pick the right people to sing hooks for you, and you can rap, it's enough for me if the outcome is great music. Of course it's a plus when a rapper can do more but it's not needed imo.
Jan 9, 2015 I disagree but to an extent. I understand what you mean in context to the way musicians have to have some sort of unique sonic sound in order to appeal. But I still think that rap has just evolved. Everything evolves. Sounds change & artists adapt to that change.
