know that for many music listeners, myself included, an album’s rating is often a factor in our choice to listen. If I see a score above an 8.5, I’m inclined to give an album a listen. But I’m left wondering, what exactly do these ratings mean? What does a review score of x/10 indicate about a music journalist’s attitude toward a record? As an example, this is pitchfork’s stated scale:

10.0: Essential

9.5-9.9: Spectacular

9.0-9.4: Amazing

8.5-8.9: Exceptional; will likely rank among writer's top ten albums of the year

8.0-8.4: Very good

7.5-7.9: Above average; enjoyable

7.0-7.4: Not brilliant, but nice enough

6.0-6.9: Has its moments, but isn't strong

5.0-5.9: Mediocre; not good, but not awful

4.0-4.9: Just below average; bad outweighs good by just a little bit

3.0-3.9: Definitely below average, but a few redeeming qualities

2.0-2.9: Heard worse, but still pretty bad

1.0-1.9: Awful; not a single pleasant track

0.0-0.9: Breaks new ground for terrible

What do you think of this scale? I’m most fascinated by the labeling of a “10” as “essential.” There are a lot of albums I consider essential that I wouldn’t give a perfect rating to. For some other sites, scores are so inflated that a 6.5/10 seems like an insult.

So I’m curious:

What’s your own personal rating scale? What examples would you give of x/10 albums? What does a 10/10 record mean to you? What factors weight in your determination of an album’s rating?

I think the best way to rate something is with a scale of .05 increase. Just like centimeters, you don’t say “oh I think this is 8.3 cm” you just can’t tell the difference just by looking at the thing you want to measure, you either say 8 cm or 8.5. Same for songs, whats the difference between 8.1 and 8.2? What makes you decide? However, I can understand a scale with .01 increases only for the albums, if you have to rate it by the average of all the songs but that’s it.

For me this album is in pair with Kamikaze and both projects are in the 4th position for best eminem album. But they are different.
I can listen to Kami only at the gym, too much anger and energy. And i can listen this new album in every situation: while i'm working in my computer or doing something at home.
