May 15, 2016 Reasonable doubt is by far the most overrated album in hip hop history, the acclaim wasn't even a real thing jay-z wasn't even considered as a top 50 rapper...Reasonable Doubt wasn't poppin in 96, it was Meek Mill status. I keep seeing n----s calling it an instant classic but no one was checkin for Hov and n----s thought it was trash until Jay himself started saying that it was classic later on. But even NY media wasn't calling a great album back in '96... nobody will be able to show a link from an article or review that described RD as a classic album before Jay-Z said it was. Then there was a period in the 90's when print media and radio was mostly located in NYC and Jay-Z decided to take this opportunity to call RD a classic, dude kept saying that for months. It resulted in Regional classics from New York & Reasonable doubt being considered universal classic... RD's acclaim was literally bought by jay-z. It feels bad to be an old man, but at the same time, it's cool to know all these stories.
May 15, 2016 Tupac albums are also incredibly overrated. Most critics gave all eyez on me a score between 6 & 8 and hip hop fans were considering him as the 3rd best west coast artist. I don't even remember anybody saying he had a great album (eg spin initially gave AEOM a 7/10 https://books.google.be/books?id=SXQ6nPE3H9wC&pg=PA106&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false ) Then pac died and all of a sudden, all eyez on me became a 9-9.5/10
May 15, 2016 Tour was not really acclaimed at all. And it's brilliant--a masterpiece, one of the best albums since 2000. At least I was right about it.
May 15, 2016 You don't know what you're talking about. This isn't evidence of Pac becoming overrated once he died--it's evidence of the New York press having no clue about West coast rap in the 90s.
May 15, 2016 oh, spin did even better, their score for AEOM went from 7 to 10/10 after Pac's death. That's also what 30% of the other magazines did at that time.
May 15, 2016 Yeah because it wasn't worth the political cost at the time lol. But what if I ghostwrote one??
May 15, 2016 he wasn't allowed to publish it. My homies at pitchfork already confirmed me WPG ain't allowed to reveiw big or important albums. And if he does, it would be for a useless site that won't even be mentioned on metacritic.
