Yea the one on the left is a protest put together by a bunch of citizens that deemed the injustice to blacks in our country is more important to bring awareness to over the risk of corona. The one on the right is an irresponsible decision made by the most powerful man in the universe to put together an unneeded rally for an election in the midst of a pandemic.

This is a fundamental misunderstanding for a lot of people. Systemic racism doesn’t require individuals to hold like white supremacist beliefs. No one believes every single cop is a racist on a personal level. It’s the system, or in other words, their training, protocols, & laws they enforce that are racist because they disproportionately impact people of color. A person can join the police force with purely good intentions but are still contributing to systemic racism because that’s how the system is set up.

In regards to the man shot here, I don’t know anything about the personal beliefs of the officer who shot him. However, his training led to him shooting an African-American man in the back while running away. That’s not a “mistake,” we see this happen far too often. That is how the system is set up to work.

I’m not sure what y’all think of John Oliver, but last night he talked about some realistic police reform that many people in the country can probably get behind. The first half of the episode he spends talking about all the police brutality from the past week and how we got here (from a historical perspective).

But the 2nd half of the video is where he dives into some of the ideas y’all are saying, stuff like defunding police and diverting that money to departments that specialize in dealing with issues like homelessness, addiction, and mental health. He talks about using de-escalation techniques instead of resorting to physical violence, getting rid of qualified immunity so individual officers can be held accountable when they commit crimes, explains the major issue across the nation with police unions being way too powerful, etc.
