To me, I only get offended by the people against the looting when their way of thinking is, “Floyd’s death and the systematic racism is atrocious, BUT looting is also a terrible thing to do.”

In my eyes, it’s like they don’t actually give a f--- about the former, and are just saying it to save face.

If they are thinking of it like, “looting probably isn’t the best way of handling it, BUT it is a result of yet another racist killing and years and years of systematic oppression,” then I can see that point of view, though I don’t necessarily agree.

the conversation should end on Floyd and the racism. Not the looting.

I mean I see where you’re coming from, and if these were just random lootings that took place I’d be 100% in agreement with you.

stealing is bad, without context.

but when you look at it in response to yet another killing of a defenseless black guy, I just think it’s so minor in the grand scheme of things. I couldn’t care less about a few people making a come up on a PS4 and a couple personal pan pizzas from the mini pizza huts in the target, when the overarching purpose of the whole thing is to protest systematic racism.

would I personally do it? No. But I just can’t complain about something so unimportant, when there are greater discussions to be had. Especially, when the store is probably insured out the a--- and can afford to replace the goods a million times over.

yes, america has extremely f----- up priorities! every elected leader who speaks after these things says something like “we need to protect property.... and life”

i understand that the optics of stealing stuff are tricky for some people but i do think there are some things to keep in mind. one, this is a brutal recession that could get much worse. two, the wealth has become so unevenly distributed in this country that a lot of people, especially but not exclusively in poor neighborhoods, see these stores come in during waves of gentrification that make their lives materially harder. three, the media LOVES to sensationalize “looting”; late last night i decided to scan news coverage, and msnbc (supposedly a left-leaning channel) was doing this pearl-clutching bit on the los angeles protesters who were “looting local businesses,” and the footage was of people taking milk from a starbucks. a starbucks! one of the biggest corporate chains in the world.
