i was in the 2004 red sox riot and saw a cop car get overturned. (also saw my first pair of college boobies heh). later a girl died, shot in the face.

the policing model in america makes no sense and leads, for a variety of reasons, to racist violence on behalf of the state. of course a society needs people who are trained to deal with active shooters; people who are trained to respond to domestic disturbances and mental health crises; people who provide aid after car accidents; people to direct traffic when lights go out. that all these things are folded into one means that poorly-trained, self-selected (disproportionately violent + racist) people who have been empowered to decide who lives and dies are lurking at every street corner in the most vulnerable neighborhoods in the country. the cops make america more dangerous, not safer.

disagree, implies the riots are strategic and not a raw collective emotional response. its easy to nod approvingly from LA or Greater Boston looking of this. its a tragedy that should be contextualized and understood but shouldnt be applauded.

you dont know which small businesses might not recover. again theoritcal, sheltered pov

right, and I agree with that in theory for sure, but two things -

1) I question whether this extends to candidates you support. The overwhelming consensus I saw from Bernie supporters (and maybe you disagree? curious what your thoughts are) is that his electoral failures are due to forces conspiring against him, not his own failure to persuade the electorate or turn out new voters

2) candidates do need to work to win votes, absolutely, but there are people on the left who don't care to be persuaded. As long as Biden doesn't support Medicare 4 All, abolishing the police, abolishing ICE, etc., he'll be entirely unacceptable. This just isn't a stance I understand generally, and it certainly isn't a stance I understand when the alternative is Donald Trump. Biden actually has worked quite a bit with the liberal wing of the party (Sanders and Warren included) to craft a more progressive party platform - probably the most progressive platform of our lifetime if we're being honest. It feels like the work of a guy who agrees with you that he needs to unite the party. But how do you win over voters who have already decided you're unacceptable?

@Donkey Kong Cuntry how dare you like his post, you were a registered republican until a few weeks ago.

I mean we are both right to an extent. (It’s just as always I have the big picture in mind heh.) Like I agree, police must have discretion and maybe fleeing felon laws or protocols should be changed. (To me it’s a shot in the leg, not One Officer unloading seven in the back.) certainly acted too hastily and too quickly. But no I’m not “reenforcing” anything lol wat - if anything your proving mmmmmy political point about how woke finger pointing cont to show diminishing returns. The “~~racism!!” charge was effective for years/decades, usually or generally for good cause but the rise of this president among other things demonstrates how little it matters increasingly. Sad but true

Lol yeah man. Not about to fully wade in again but like, this is the issue with these emotional partisan charged movements. Ofc he shouldn’t have been shot seven times or paralyzed but that said IF if if he was reaching for a knife that’s a big wrinkle to the story. But instead folks always wanna moral soapbox and scream racist or whatever. It gets played and that instinct is tbh partly what has empowered trump to this pt. We need to be thoughtful.
