right, and I agree with that in theory for sure, but two things -

    1) I question whether this extends to candidates you support. The overwhelming consensus I saw from Bernie supporters (and maybe you disagree? curious what your thoughts are) is that his electoral failures are due to forces conspiring against him, not his own failure to persuade the electorate or turn out new voters

    2) candidates do need to work to win votes, absolutely, but there are people on the left who don't care to be persuaded. As long as Biden doesn't support Medicare 4 All, abolishing the police, abolishing ICE, etc., he'll be entirely unacceptable. This just isn't a stance I understand generally, and it certainly isn't a stance I understand when the alternative is Donald Trump. Biden actually has worked quite a bit with the liberal wing of the party (Sanders and Warren included) to craft a more progressive party platform - probably the most progressive platform of our lifetime if we're being honest. It feels like the work of a guy who agrees with you that he needs to unite the party. But how do you win over voters who have already decided you're unacceptable?

Oh give me a break. Guys face it - you’re doubling down on a false gross characterization about biden that’s being refuted every day of this race. It’s ok to be wrong.

This bs about his decline was always so so surface and mean and just stupid. Funny So yeah I’m challenging you and @Donkey Kong Cuntry to actually self reflect and stop vomiting back progressive twitter boilerplate. (That’s always yet again giving trump a messaging playbook.) be smarter.

it definitely extends to candidates i support. (two things can be true at once, too—i can be frustrated at the party establishment’s distaste for and undermining of his campaign while also pointing out that that was always going to be the lay of the land and he failed to do what he could and should have done to overcome it.) the guy i voted for in the last senate election here f----- up and lost a fair election, plain and simple.

i’m curious what you mean by this. do you mean there are progressives who are going to stay home, or just that there are progressives who are pissed off biden is the candidate? because while there are some of both, i think it’s kind of a straw man to conflate the two (which i’m not saying you’re doing—but it is certainly done a lot).

i think there are plenty of compelling reasons to vote for biden—i’m going to vote for him—but i don’t think that can or should stop voters from voicing their displeasure about what they see as policy failure or political illogic.

and while andy is going to caricature everyone who declines to vote for joe biden as a purple-haired grad student, i think there are plenty of reasons regular americans feel defeated and disenfranchised by him. (i.e.- during a pandemic and near-depression he still won’t embrace the idea of divorcing health care from employment, during a rash of highly-publicized police killings people are uneasy with his past legislation and his current equivocating.)

i think that the number of people who stay home out of spite or vehement rejection of biden is not the one to worry about. the numbers to worry about are the potentially much larger ones: of people who just aren’t bothered to leave their houses to vote for him, or don’t feel inspired by or included in his campaign enough to knock doors, make phone calls, talk to their friends and coworkers, drive shuttles from nursing homes to the polls. those are important! and i don’t think that me pointing out the serious deficiencies biden has in these departments is the same as voting for trump or whatever. i’m sure you don’t think so either.

sigh. must i do this again? no. im not *lecturing* anyone, definitely not 'teenagers' or whatever group you're choosing to feign superiority about. I'm lecturing *you*.
And yes, outrage drives much of our politics, certainly online. and definitely in progressive and conservative bases. look inward.

? Just cause I'm not apart of the activist base, or an advocate, and pay taxes as a property owner and take showers, doesn't mean I'm some cynic about this stuff. Actually the contrary.

are you seriously calling me smug? kk. i won't even bother with this one. but the idea 'im not interested in reality' when you're still harping like the primary isnt over is....absurd. what are you even arguing?

Yeah, I'm the one who doesn't grasp messaging. You know what I've done irl and ik how you thrived in a similar setting lol. and NO you're wrong, in fact. 'you people' have constantly handed an opps campaign to trump. allowing him to point to ~CrAzY violent liberals RuinINg our cIties~ is the definition of leaning into a punch. "doing the cops bidding" dude we arent skateboarding behind a mall, snitching about smoking lol. stop conflating national politics with your middle school trauma

stupefying, trumpian. youuuurr side is doing that. is bernie the nominee? are we undermining him? have you been right about ANY of this lol

idk man i take no joy in it and again find biden to be far more coherent than trump, but i also have serious concerns about biden’s mental competency going forward based on his public appearances. he wouldn’t be the first president in decline and i’m sure he won’t be the last but it’s something that, anecdotally, plenty of people ive talked to have commented on, and to get so defensive about it is strange to me!

as a legislative aide at the state house we would have like, weekly groups doing 'lobby your state rep!' day. they'd organize, come in, feel very good about themselves, hectoring some 21 y/o who just wants to listen to relapse in his cubicle. then they would leave. im telling you, just anecdotally, s--- like that does not matter one aota. its pointless lol.

if you think me being snarky to u over text three IPAs deep means *officially* im against, like I Have a Dream, cesar chavez or whatever iconagrphy then..... no lol. im sry but yet again you're coming up short.

do u grasp the idea that community organizers are doing right by their neighbors in a way that has nothing to do with the stuffed shirts at the statehouse lol

Why are you so staunchly against the idea that a 77 year old man who frequently stumbles over his words, speaks in run on sentences that go nowhere, and gets irritable enough to say "IF YA DONT VOTE FOR JOE YOU AINT BLACK, JACK!" and challenge constituents to push up contests has early signs of dementia? I'm not saying he's, like, Uncle Junior walking to the Newark hood in a bathrobe because he thought it was 1957. He's 77 years old. It could happen to anyone at that age. I'm still voting for him.

End of the day i'm votin for Joe. 4 years of an old a---, possibly declining man, with his heart & platform in the right place vs 4 more years of a fear mongering, no-game-plan having, violence inciting racist that wants to putinize himself into a third or lifelong term.

Its 4 years of Biden, not a marriage ceremony, literally just 4 years. Once they're up, we can just go on our jolly way to the primaries & try to elect the other candidate.

He's got his issues, and i certainly don't like them, but even with them he's the better option.

baseless honestly. out of context, manipulated. did you think this during his speech yday or the dnc? bc if so we were simply watching two separate events.
candidly, youre in a bubble man. its one thing to be like, word hes 77.... but its so ageist and overplayed and warped. its not sundowning or w/e armchair diagnosis you guys are making lol. its just not!

and yeah 'defensive' - dude its undermining the only choice and chance we have to remove trump from office. these are the stakes! THINK!!
