    @cpt awesome WPG joint acc it's like how you said if you're not taking action by voting Biden you're effectively voting for Trump.

    If you're not taking action by donating, protesting, and/or at the very least speaking out against this, then you're effectively siding with the police.

    fair - but thats a CLEAR binary, literally a choice. racism = bad is easy enough, but imo a lot of this gets v v nuanced. should we be gentrifying neighborhoods? if uve lived in a city, odds are you have. thats just an example, but this imo is farrrrrrr more of a muddle than what alot of these posts suggest..

    fair but i also think posting a black out on social media is kinda worse than doing nothing.... bc so much of this is performative.

    I agree with you about the black square! It was stupid, I didn't post it, and I called people out who posted it and did nothing else. That was a #Kony2012 a--- move. I don't count a black square as speaking out in any capacity. It's the laziest, nothingest move you could possibly do. It was even counterproductive because people were drowning out useful info posted under BLM hashtags with black squares.

    As long as social media exists people will use it to be performative for a variety of reasons, but I don't think we should use that as an excuse to not do good ourselves.

    There is more nuance to it but I think still think it really comes down to being with it or against it. For example if you're not out there protesting because you don't agree with the rioting and don't want there to be any chance you could be involved in that if things turn sour but still donate money to the ACLU or whatever, I consider that to be with the movement.

    I know it's not an exact comparison, but you don't have to agree with every single aspect of the protest to be with the movement, just like I don't need to be in agreement with everything Joe Biden says to vote for him over Trump.

    I had so many people defriend me on Facebook after Kony. Every year I would post #Kony2013, 2014, etc maybe the hashtag will work this year guys. Kony can't k--- children when you add a hashtag to his name

    The only reason I posted the square was after one of my best friends who happens to be black (yikes! The optics of typing this seems so bad considering the “I’m not racist, I have black friends!” meme), asked me to post it. It sucks to be grouped in with the assholes who posted it just to look like they care.

    but yea I also donated to BLM, so I’m aware there’s a lot more to be done than a dumbass black square

    I don't see anything wrong with posting it if you are doing something. I personally wouldn't post it even if asked. I would let that person know how I actually contributed to the cause. You shouldn't have to post something on social media that doesn't do anything. Some people put that up just to get likes for themselves

    lol I talked s--- on it the whole time and I remember one person telling me "you're a writer, you could be using that skill for good instead of speaking out against a good cause." Felt very validated when it turned out that s--- was a sham and the dude went crazy masturbating in the streets.

    Yeah nothing wrong with posting it if you're doing it in addition to other things. It's just if you're posting a square and then going back to your regular dog posting and doing literally nothing else then it's clearly performative.

    Yea it was conflicting to me because I didn’t want to make it seem like some crocodile tears situation that I see so many other people doing, where it’s utter bs and they are doing to to save face.

    but then on the other hand, I have black people that I grew up with that I haven’t seen in years posting things like, “white people I know that aren’t speaking up, don’t think it goes unnoticed.” And then I’m thinking like, d---, do I make a post on social media that shows the world I’m on your side, or do I continue to donate and make moves behind the scenes. My close friends will know what I’ve done, but will the people I consider myself friends with that I haven’t seen in years as life puts us in different directions know the stuff I’ve done if I don’t talk about it in public.

    at the end of the day, I shouldn’t concern myself with these issues that are so minor in the grand scheme of things. But then I end up feeling like s--- for thinking about it in such a selfish manner lmao
