I'm sketching a little but I need to hear some objective opinions about this.

A few months ago we had some neighbors move into a new building across the road. The building was built on the literal edge of our local Native reserve. It was originally about a km of woodland, before a small section was cleared so the house could be built with a driveway accessible to the main road. The main road acting as the "property line" of the reserve. The road itself isn't reserve land though.

The local reserve is really, really, bad when it comes to crime. The national crime severity index in Canada is an 81.4, with the most violent city being Winnipeg at 145.4. The local reserve has a violent crime severity index of 627.3, with an overall average severity index of 497.4 if you average in the non violent crimes. The crime rate is ridiculously high.

Anyway, when the people moved in we initially had some problems about their animal care. Two dogs were being left outside day and night, regardless of the weather or temperature. One of the dogs would constantly wander onto our property, trembling, freezing, and desperately trying to be sheltered. The first time it happened I brought her over to their house, told them it was wandering and asked them to keep a better eye on it. Eventually it got to the point where I had to call the local SPCA out of concern for the animals life. They informed me they had no jurisdiction on native land, and I had to file a police report. Police report filed, police visited them, the dogs stayed. A few weeks later they found the dog dead in the ditch by their house. Hit by a car.

Fast forward a few months and one of the residents knocks on our door early one morning. He's saying that his cellphone is out of minutes, doesn't have a land line, and asks to use our phone because his child (who isn't his, the kids Dad is in prison) missed the bus and can't make it to school. My grandfather offers to drive the boy to school, they kindly accept.

Then we had a brutal winter. Snowstorm after snowstorm. A week ago we still had 5 feet of snow everywhere except for our driveway. It's mostly melted now. Our deck is clear, lawn is clear, etc. Today buddy came over with his girlfriend and child asking if we've seen a black chihuahua around. He said he put it out a few nights ago to pee but it never came back. We told them no dice, and they walked back home.

Jump to tonight, 11pm, I'm listening to music in my bedroom with my headphones on when I hear a noise at my window. It sounded like the type of streaking noise you hear when you rub your hand down clean glass or a clean desk. It scared the f--- out of me and by the time I had my headphones off to get a better listen it had stopped. My basement windows make a horrible screeching/creaking noise when you open them, even the slightest opening causes the noise. I went upstairs and asked if my Grandfather had heard a similar noise, he said no, said it was probably nothing and then put the dogs out the back door. Immediately the dogs start barking. I run out and tell my dog to "get it" and he runs around to the front of the house (where my bedroom windows face) but there's nothing there. Haven't heard anything since (it's now 1am)

So, am I being reasonable in assuming it was an attempted break in, or simply just a conglomerate built off of general paranoia?

I struggle with things of this nature often. If there's no hard evidence of tampering it's probably nothing. I usually have to do quite a bit of investigation before I'm sure though

I'd be paranoid as f--- too if the area crime rate was that bad, so I don't blame you. h---, I'm paranoid enough as it is when it comes to hearing weird noises throughout the night. If you didn't see anything that could be "evidence" of a break in, I'd look around a bit in the morning to see if there's anything unusual.

Tough call. As there'll be stereotyping like that for sure. There are always areas of cities that got bad names so you play ignorant and kind of assume that it's always bad. For the most part when you get to know people it gives you a perspective on things.

It could maybe have been an attempt... however, were you sitting in the dark? like why would they try to break into the basement if lights were on? I don't know, I'm no thief but I'd attempt a dark basement and use a flashlight or some s---. But then again that's why I don't do s--- like that b/c maybe that's the dumb way lol.

Second, seems like you've helped out around the area so some people would know who you guys are. Then again there are people who have no remorse and it doesn't matter if you know them or have helped them, they can turn so easily.

My post really didn't give any incite sadly lol. But it is a tough call for sure. Especially if you heard the screeching sound and your dogs started barking right away. Don't go in accusing anyone but be on your toes next time when it happens run up the stairs and out the door like Usain Bolt.

could very well have been an attempt...put dowel in the tracks of your windows and sliding doors if you don't already
so you're obviously very close to a reserve, how close are the rcmp? I can't imagine living in a rural area near a rez bruh

@LasiK I dunno man you're story does sound a bit sus, right... But, anyone in that line of work with half a brain knows to never try houses that have dogs, they're a massive complication. To me, the worst case scenario was that, someone did try to break in - heard the dog and gapped it. Very Unlikely they come back, because of the dog. trust.

I live in a ground floor apartment 6 miles from Newark. While the area I live in is nice you hear about break ins in the area sometimes. I live on a busy road so my front windows are fine, but the side ones would be a good place since it's secluded and view is covered by bushes. So I just went on Amazon and got these window wedges: [IMG]
They are cheap and work good. You can get better ones as well, but having a dog would probably be deterrent enough
