not caught up on this at all are they actually doing anything wrong or are they just regular people in clown costumes
because if they're not physically hurting people or breaking serious laws this sounds like a (really effective) viral marketing campaign for a horror movie. isn't the IT remake coming out soon?

They've been trying to lure children into wooded areas, and I believe a woman has been stabbed by one. Also, a teenager was killed by one, in I believe Pennsylvania.

They've also been using social media and called into schools making threats about bombing them and stealing kids.

While the clowns try to be scary, there have been so many jokes about going clown hunting on facebook in Australia, no ones taking it seriously. A clown has also been hospitalised after getting ran over in front of a liquor store.
