Jun 10, 2015 1.) Fargo 2.) No Country for Old Men 3.) Miller's Crossing 4.) Inside Llewyn Davis 5.) A Serious Man
Jun 10, 2015 1. No Country For Old Men 2. The Big Lebowski 3. True Grit 4. Fargo 5. Miller's Crossing A Serious Man needs a rewatch, i saw it in the wrong moment. after a few years i've realized my lists will always be diferent than @Twan
Jun 10, 2015 1. Fargo 2. No Country For Old Men 3. The Big Lebowski 4. O Brother Where Art Thou? 5. Barton Fink I feel like Miller's Crossing would be a top 5 contender but I honestly remember nothing about it. Very much due for a rewatch. Most underrated are The Man Who Wasn't There and A Serious Man. No idea why they don't get discussed. Oh and I would rank Burn After Reading higher than most as well, I think. Only ones I didn't like are The Hudsucker Proxy and Intolerable Cruelty. No desire to see either one ever again.
Jun 10, 2015 Out of the ones I've watched I'd have to say No country for old men the big lebowski burn after reading fargo O brother where art thou?
Jun 10, 2015 The Big Lebowski No Country For Old Men Inside Llewyn Davis Millers Crossing Barton Fink
Jun 10, 2015 Fargo is my definitive number one. I recommend the remastered edition on Blu-Ray, not the initial Blu-Ray release.
Jun 10, 2015 definitely my top three, in the same order. (i watch lebowski more than i watch no country, because, you know.) would have to think about the others
Jun 10, 2015 1. Fargo 2. No Country For Old Men 3. The Big Lebowski 4. Inside Llewyn Davis 5. O Brother Where Art Thou
Jun 11, 2015 1. A Serious Man 2. No Country for Old Men 3. Fargo 4. Inside Llewyn Davis 5. Barton Fink
Jun 11, 2015 Agreed. Worst Coen bros are: 1. Ladykillers 2. Hudsucker 3. Intolerable Cruelty Agreed, Man Who Wasn't There is VERY slept on -- and why? Gorgeously shot, and if one of your plot points revolves around ScarJo giving you a blo-jo- then... I do disagree -- A Serious Man and Burn After Reading seem to get plenty of love. Which has always been puzzling to me as they're variations of better Coen Bros films (Barton Fink > Serious Man, Lebowski > Burn After Reading)
Jun 11, 2015 I'm not sure I see how A Serious Man is a variant of Barton Fink. Barton Fink centers on the artistic process and is filled with touches of surrealism...neither of which really applies to A Serious Man. With its setting in a Midwestern 1960s Jewish community and with its existential reckoning, I'd argue A Serious Man may be the most personal film the Coens have made (By returning to the place of their childhood to ask the big "Why?" questions, it's kin in a sense to Malick's Tree of Life).
Jun 11, 2015 well, tonally i don't see the tree of life comparison... perhaps on an existential level, but i do see a serious man as a comparison piece to barton fink in that respect. i agree they're debating different questions, but i see them coming from the same voice
Jun 11, 2015 Yep, tonally the Coens will never have anything in common with Malick. The comparison was more along the existential lines (both feature characters very explicitly asking "Why"), but also in their choice of semi-autobiographical settings (1950s suburban Texas and 1960s suburban Midwest respectively) to ask those questions. In both regards, I think A Serious Man is a very personal work rather than any sort of retread.
Jun 12, 2015 Right, that makes sense. I can see your Tree of Life-Serious Man connection for sure. To me (just for the sake of discussion), just a few comments: Not in the same way (but as you know), Barton Fink also has its origins in the Coens personal life as well, having been their way of coping with writers block while writing Millers Crossing The sense of hopelessness (and the randomness of life) reflected in the deadpan Barton Fink is similarly depicted in A Serious Man. Both films are grappling with an -- at best -- indifferent universe (and maybe antagonistic) Barton and Larry are similar protagonists, in that they're established jewish professionals whose hubris leads to their downfall. They're also, in a way, a refraction of the Coen Bros. in a way, wouldn't you say? so maybe "retread" is unfair to characterize a serious man, but i still see several connective layers, not unlike how burn after reading is a kind of companion film for big lebowski
Jun 12, 2015 The Big Lebowski is the only Coen Brothers film I didn't like. Overrated in my view...Raising Arizona is a close second-- with Lady Killers being third.
Jun 12, 2015 Agree on Raising Arizona and Lady Killers (both are Bottom 2 to me) but you broke my heart about Big Lebowski
