    Imo they should do something like LotRO (lord of the rings online)

    You create a character, and accept quests from npc's, following a general storyline or just exploring everything. The original game ended with a final quest in angmar, and it was ftp; there were starting regions like the Shire which were accessible to everyone; other regions like the Trollshaws (the area around rivendell) where accessible but you had to unlock them in order to gain access to the regional quests. You unlocked them by grinding (gained points by doing deeds / quests) or by paying money.

    After the original game ended (Shadows Of Angmar), they started creating more content and continued the main storyline, which takes you through Moria and then to the war in Gondor, with all the regions west (and including) Gondor been already made, with basically thousands of npc's and quests. The game is basically ftp, but the grinding can be unreal; I unlocked some regions like lake Evendim, then got an offer on steam (16 euros during x-mas) for a 4-region pack (Moria and 3 other regions eastern). Which is basically nothing, right?

    Pokemon could be very similar: you create a character, start with a pokemon in Kanto, complete quests / deeds (catch pokemon, complete the pokedex, win x number of battles, help npc's etc) and considering the huge fanbase, they can import hats or bonuses which can be bought with in-game points or with money. When they make enough money, they update the game => Johto and so on. Considering how big and expanding the fanbase is, this has the potential to be huge. No need for starting over, no need for sequels etc. It'll be goat. But it needs developers, and nintendo to allow something like this, considering that they haven't shown the desire to explore this option.
