    Was there from 2009 - 2013 then half a year in 2014, which is why it's so terrible I don't speak Dutch.

    Always a good excuse to go somewhere when you have family that can put you up :emoji_wink: I guess when you have a small country that only has beach to one side of it you have to expect the crowds, which is a shame, would be nice to get it to yourself. One thing that I always admired about you guys is just how accommodating and multilingual you are!
    See, I know that the cost of living is quite high there but I never found it too bad. I guess cos Perth is even worse I felt like I was getting a break in Ams. But I dont blame you for shopping in Germany when it's literally a walk away.

    Oh good to know there's that square if I ever jump off the metro line there, I've always seen the stadium on my way to Ikea lol but not much of a football fan so never actually been in it, looks massive though. Because of my dietary choices I have missed out on a lot of typical Dutch food =( hutspot, tried raw haring, stroopwaffles (fresh from the markets, yum) Febo frites, all the Heijn desserts =p

    Would make sense that where you're located German would be more common than English, help you with those shopping trips. I mean most people say because of the media influence the American rubs off. I know this one dude I worked with (from Langeraar) had the strongest American accent, he used to get asked all the time what part of the States he was from lol, he'd never been but was just influenced. I still have to look up the definition of some English words :'(

    d---, how did you do that? :emoji_flushed: I once went to a mc Donalds and I had to explain my order in english. The girl who helped me didn't know any dutch at all lol. I thought it was weird but I guess it's more common there than it is on this side of the country.

    I don't mind going to Germany at all, I like it there. The people are friendly and even try to speak dutch (my experience at least) I went to Austria last summer, great up there in the mountains, a good way to practise the language. And the other way around, german people visit holland as well: they go to Scheveningen, Zandvoort etc. to the beach and they also visit supermarkets for products that are cheaper here.

    You really missed some great things here, with the food. But tried good things :) Stroopwafels are famous and delicious, just had one this afternoon with my coffee. It's funny you mention haring, when we went to Austria, we took a few with us for someone who lives there. He's dutch and didn't had one in 7 years.

    Google translate is always good to have around, same as movies etc, but I have to say S80 and especially SL helped me more than english I had at school.

    A lot of smiling and nodding =p Like I said earlier, being a part of the expat community, even though you get to experience a different culture, to an extent, it's so easy to not. And my work place was a like 'black hole', it s----d you in. We had a bar, a smoking room, free bread, eggs, cereal ect. We worked there, lived there, partied there. We had everything, besides weed, we needed to never leave the place if we didn't want to. Hence why I didn't put as much effort into learning as I should have.
    I had an incident like that at the Leidseplein Maccas after a late shift, tried my hand at ordering in Dutch. The person didn't understand me.. I thought it was because my Dutch wasn't good enough but maybe it was that they didn't speak it lol.

    Very smart to go to a country where you can really practice the language ;p I would love to visit Austria one day, looks so beautiful, what kind of things did you get up to? I like German people, I've worked with a couple and they always seem like such nice, generally happy people. Do you think you would ever consider moving there?
    I miss out on good food everywhere by not eating meat =p How did your friend find the haring it after so long? I was preparing myself for something horrible but it really wasn't bad at all.

    Would make sense that interacting with people online would give you better knowledge, making you more familiar with English slang and just generally the way we talk to each other without all the formalities. How old were you when you started posting on SL?
