Already failed, this looks like it was launched by maybe about 1000 people led by one Colonel. In other words epically premature.

they obviously hoped the common people would support them instead of resisting. Critical misjudgment on their part

Obviously there's more to it. Many things don't make sense. And with politics, when something happens, you have to watch who wins from it.

Erdogan has something to do with it, 100%. He is a sneaky MFer, and he already fired more than 2000 judges, militars... His purge has started. One of his enemies still standing were the kemalist secular fraction of the military.

With this failed coup, he has the free way to eliminate them. His people that went out to the street are f---ing fanatics, murdering and lynching young soldiers (many were saying they were just obeying orders - what kind of half assed coup can this be?) and also whipping them in public like the extremist islamists would do.

Now death penalty is also on the table. Now the secular people are the ones seen as a threat, in a country that still is oficially non-religious.

I believe the fraction of the army who tried to make the coup were simply tricked and left alone then, so they showed their true colors. Turkey is very very f-----.
