Man I’m so happy with this season so far.
I wasn’t really a fan of the idea of Harrison following in Dexter’s footsteps at first, but I think they’re handling it well. He’s gonna be on some Anakin Skywalker s--- trying to choose between Dexter’s path and Matt’s dad’s path.
Was also cool to see them have Batista show up in a way that made sense—was wondering if they’d do some cameos but couldn’t think of a way that would feel natural.Ordinary Joel, JMG, Fitzy and 1 other person like this. -

I think you'll still enjoy season 5 and 7. They're not as good as the first four but they're solid and entertaining. Season 8 is borderline unwatchable and honestly a waste of your time lol, I'd just watch the first episode and then read the plot synopsis for episodes 2-11 and then watch the last episode to see how bad it is. Season 6 is pretty dumb but it's still nowhere near as bad as 8.pluto✰, Ordinary Joel, The Real Slim Shady and 1 other person like this. -

I rewatched Dexter during quarantine and most of it holds up pretty well—I think people (myself included) often forget that Dexter never really tried to be "AAA Prestige TV" like The Wire or The Sopranos, it was always a little goofy despite its dark content and was never supposed to be realistic.
I think the fourth season is still the highlight (and the only one I'd say approaches true "prestige TV"), though 1-3 are still great too. Seasons 5 and 7 are flawed but enjoyable. 6 is pretty bad but still watchable, and season 8 I genuinely couldn't make it past the first episode lol. Even during quar I couldn't validate spending 12 hours rewatching S8 of Dexter.
The teaser actually has me excited for this, I think it could turn out legitimately good. For one thing, we (hopefully) don't have to follow all these characters like Quinn and Batista anymore, who ran out of interesting storylines like three seasons before the show ended and were basically just filler (killing off Doakes so early was a mistake cuz he was by far the best cop character, but they kinda wrote themselves into a corner with that one). Some fresh faces and villains are gonna be great for the show. I assume Hannah/Harrison will be back in some form...I actually didn't mind Hannah as a character I just think she was handled sorta poorly and was shoehorned in weirdly.
If there's enough story to continue this for more than one season that will give it a good ending, I trust the original showrunner's vision—but my biggest worry is that showtime will artificially extend the show's life again like they do with all their shows. I know that the ending the showrunner initially had in mind was something like
it turns out that all of Dexter's voiceovers in the show were him ruminating on his life on his last day on death row, strapped down to a table waiting to get the lethal injection. It was in a reddit AMA and he didn't say exactly how he envisioned Dexter getting caught or how the story got there, but I think in terms of Dexter's fate it would have a fitting ending.pluto✰, Ordinary Joel, Worm and 1 other person like this. -

Dexter: New Blood is shattering records for Showtime. Over the series’ 10-episode run, it averaged over 8 million weekly viewers across all Showtime platforms, becoming the most-watched series in the premium cabler’s history.
The series finale drew 3 million total viewers on Sunday alone, making it the biggest Showtime finale in more than eight years, since Homeland in 2013, according to the network. Written by Clyde Phillips, the finale also set a new Showtime record with 2 million viewers from streaming and on demand platforms on Sunday.

Overall I really enjoyed it. Having just recently rewatched the previous seasons (originally watched it years ago) I feel like the level wasn’t too far off the latter seasons, but this time the ending was much better. It was necessary & although I knew it was coming, it still made me feel weird finally seeing what he’s been avoiding for so long.
Cannot help but feel that we got ROBBED of Batista & Dexter meeting up again. Can’t believe they built that up into nothing. Could’ve squeezed some of the happenings earlier on into fewer episodes & made the climax 1-2 episodes longer. I think the intensity of seeing those two in the same room could have made for one of Dexter’s best & most dark episodes. I feel like that would’ve made more sense to be Dexter’s moment of realisation that he needs to die for it all to stop, rather than when Harrison forces his hand.
…and Harrison pulling the trigger was somewhat poetic, as Dexter also (indirectly) killed his father, but I feel the ending focussed on a potential spin-off with Harrison guided by Dexter appearing as his dark passenger, rather than nailing it from all angles. But I do think that spin-off would be surprisingly successful as Harrison is extremely likeable.
tl;dr necessary death, does the previous seasons justice, & is worthy of the reboot. Glad they made it so we got closureThe Product, DKC and Ordinary Joel like this. -

I agree with mostly everything that's been said so far about this feeling rushed but overall I'm happy to have some level of closure. Much better than the previous attempt, that's for sure.
My only major gripe with it is how can anyone expect a child to grow up "normal" after pumping a rifle shot into his own dad's heart and watching him bleed out and die? It leaves the door open for a long running spin off of watching Harrison's decent into madness and dispare with (I'm sure) Dexter appearing as the occasional cameo similar to his dad and Deb in this season. The Product, Ordinary Joel and Worm like this. -
