The people over correcting that "much real hip-hop" s--- are just as dumb tbh. Rap music has always had room for both the gibberish of Rapper's Delight and the poetry of The Message. Not to mention the fundamental misunderstanding that lyricism is a some quantitative figure. Biggie was perfectly comfortable rhyming single syllables when the song called called for it. Aesop Rock isn't good because he uses a bunch of words. He's good because of how he uses a bunch of words. Treating it like math is what gets you hollow, autism rhyme schemes. That doesn't mean it isn't fun to get elegant with structure either.

Some artists have a form of lyricism that they are good at; Cam'ron always had the sometimes hilarious rhyme schemes and colorful metaphors, Kanye always knew how to bring out the best of his incredible range with the right words and so on.

To answer the question, "lyricism" is only a part of what makes a certain artist appealing to me. There are a lot of factors that go in to sum up an artist but it's never a guarantee that the music will be great as well.

That's the point, it's not supposed to be boxed in. When you say "good production", there isn't a specific type of production that comes to mind, because all forms of production can slap. Same w lyrics.

Lyrics matter just as much as any other aspect of the music, but it's totally possible to have a goat song without good lyrics, like how inversely dudes like SPM have amazing songs for lyrics alone despite flow sometimes being literally just talking.

wow interesting point i guess thats true

but the difference people dont have a pre concieved idea of what "good production" is and thats universally understood

when someone says lyrical there are a number of totally different connotations that ppl think of but they arent really agreed upon

Lately I have been listening to other genres more because I care less about lyrics and more about the music tbh.

But yeah good song lyrics can be important to me if thats what the rapper is going for. If I want to hear a nice club b-----r idc about lyrics, but a song like, for example Jay-Z's Regrets, is also amazing because of the substance.

Its probably not the most important thing if we re talkin about enjoying music
but i've found myself more interested in some clever wordplays or a deep meaning rhyme..

I don't think Kendricks fans have reached that level, just the fair weather tpab blues notes stans.

Not all of them, sure. But a part of them. And to be fair there are also a lot of guys like rapmusik who are emimem fans but don't deny he fell off.

h--- even I like some of his post hiatus stuff

Catching up to this thread now and agree with this 100%. Some people find good rhymes 'lyricism' others mean content/subject matter.

To me content is not as important as execution, so many things in rap are talked about like soo much, but you can do it differently and still be unique somewhat. Or you aren't and you just got a dope beat, nice flow and it sounds amazing. Fine with me lol

A lot of people define lyricism as dictionary rappers which is far from the truth. Redman wasn't a dictionary rapper but his metaphors are like nobody else's. Theirs more to being a good lyricist than stringing Harvard standard words. Even basic rappers can be lyricists just depending on what words they choose to use in their songs. Drake can be a lyricist (an average one at best) even Kodak black can be lyrical when he rhymes.
