What if the song flopping is the result of a pre-calculated strategy?

Hear me out, did Em honestly think he'd get a hit single with no drums, no guitar, no 808s in 2017??? With the type of people he's been making music with for this album, are we seriously supposed to believe this? And when the h--- did his "sales decline" as he pointed out in WOW? MMLP2 out-performed Recovery on the charts, and all of his albums including his greatest hits have been selling nonstop. Sales only declined, coincidentally, for this song. He had to have known full well this wouldn't do huge numbers. Almost like a self fulfilling prophecy.

I'm not saying Eminem made a song thinking "cant wait for this to tank!" But him ignoring what he KNOWS works in order to focus on the story being told shouldn't reflect how relevant Em is or supposedly isn't.

What happens when people put you on a pedestal but you can’t hope to live up to their expectations?

This is the situation that rapper Eminem grapples with in his new track “Walk on Water” that was released on Nov. 10.

Say what you will about Eminem: He has been a constant in the music industry since the ‘90s and continues to make a huge impact on fans and casual listeners alike. From classic hits like “The Real Slim Shady” and “Lose Yourself” to the more recent songs like “The Monster," the rapper has created a career that is so successful it’s almost expected that whatever he releases will be groundbreaking.

But as it is revealed in “Walk on Water”, the rapper has a significant amount of doubt and insecurity.

The track opens with Beyoncé singing “I walk on water but I ain’t no Jesus/I walk on water but only when it freezes”. This could perhaps directly point to Eminem’s video for “Rap God”, where it is shown that he walks on water at the end. Even though the rapper declared himself a Rap God, “Walk on Water” seems to be his way of saying that he still has limits.

The track on a whole carries a sense of desperation. Eminem struggles against his past, saying that it doesn’t matter what he does now because critics and fans will either not care or will find a way to pick it apart: “I know the mark's high, butter-flies rip apart my stomach/Knowin’ that no matter what bars I come with/You’re gonna harp, gripe, and/That’s a hard Vicodin to swallow.”

However, near the end of the track, Eminem gains more confidence and speaks out against the critics who constantly wonder when or if he’ll retire: “But when I do fall from these heights though, I’ll be fine/I won’t pout or cry or spiral down or whine/But I’ll decide if it’s my final bow this time around.”

The song ends with Eminem re-iterating to fans that he is just a person but when he raps, he feels like a god. The final line, “b----, I wrote ‘Stan’”, is Eminem stating what he considers one of the proudest moments of his career. The song is one of the rapper’s most successful and critically-acclaimed. And, interestingly enough, “Walk on Water” features the scribbling and paper-tearing sound effects that are in “Stan” as well.

Overall, the song is a sincere, gut-deep track. It embodies what many fans love about Eminem: his dedication to his rhymes and lyrics and the emotion behind them. Beyoncé’s vocals add another layer of emotionality to “Walk on Water” while still keeping the focus on the main artist.

If “Walk on Water” is any indication, the rapper’s rumored forthcoming album will be another hit, filled with songs that show the world why artists like Eminem don’t come around every day.

I don't understand why your trying so hard to convince people your view is the only correct one.. Not saying i like it or i agree or disagree, i just don't understand why you got such a hard on to tell people this sucks. Let them be. I don't get it.
