    I don't even care if it leaks. the quick announcement (as opposed to knowing the release date for 3 months) makes this wait til Friday a lot easier

    There were always artists who made albums full of catchy stuff and artists who successfully balanced both
    For example Cole's last album wasn't really full of catchy stuff

    One of the bigggest online retailers over here can't deliver the album until the 19th. Don't know what Shady is doing with this release, but I can't remember that ever happened before.

    @Koolo I'm curious

    on SL there was a dude (not gonna say his name) who had 2 unreleased modern-at-the-time Eminem songs. you confirmed he was legit. he said if they weren't on MMLP2 they'd be released. Ofc I assume they were on MMLP2, so do you remember what they were?

    Yup this is spot on. And to make this even more profound, labels are now searching for artists with an internet presence who already get the views/streams and have a following on social media. Based on this popularity, the label signs the artist.

    Back in the day, labels would look for emerging or raw or undiscovered talent and help mold and shape the artist (for better or worse).

    While it's still way too early to say for sure, I think this is why today we see a larger number of "trendy one hit wonder" rappers but only a handful who truly dominate the genre for an extended period of time. On the flip side, back in the day, yes you still had one hit wonders, but it didn't seem like there were nearly as many. But you also had a larger number of artists who dominated hip hop (or whatever genre they were in) for an extended period.

    Basically, there existed more dominate artists with sustained success back in the day because the labels were financially invested in the artists. They put money into molding and growing and promoting the artist. So it was in the label's best interest to keep milking that cow for as long as possible, hence, there were more artists with sustained success. Fast forward to today, since that investment cost isn't being made on the same scale (I'm throwing s--- at the wall hoping it sticks), it's much easier for labels to hit the board room and say "Next!" They can move onto the next trendy thing more swiftly since they aren't as financially invested in the artist.

    I have no stats to back this up and could be 100% wrong. This might be a case of revisionist history. If so, my bad.

    Edit: added a few sentences to drive home a bs point I'm making up as I go along
