But they’re still not displays of ‘peak-writing’ from Em, a career spanning 25 years - we’re talking about a top tier lyricist with these^? That’s why I said ‘so-called’ because these few schemes in a full project littered with simile punches are not displays of top tier lyricism. Em would get slaughtered in a battle against a lyricist (or his former self in many eras) coming out with lyrics on par with this. & I don’t equate ‘funny with corny’, there’s plenty of funny rappers that don’t hinder the quality of their schemes but actually incorporate them & use the right context & timing - old Em was funny for exactly this reason. New Em is funny outside of his music, he just uses dad puns to get YouTube reactions, I keep saying this. Some of his new music can invoke a slight chuckle on 1st listen, but it’s usually an eye roll & further devalues the music itself for replay. There’s a reason his older music wasn’t littered with these, it’s filler. Kendrick isn’t my favourite rapper, Em is, but I know how Stan’s feel about Em being a target of criticism so I’ll ignore all of your cheap shots at King Kenny because you’re upset with me.
May 30, 2022 You're right, I am being toxic, sorry. If it were a battle, he would have approached it differently. Side B is mostly lighthearted fun. I'm not the one using the term "peak" for current Em. I am merely saying he is still impressive and some of his recent work is my favorite. You could say Darkness is somewhat of a peak of what his double-meaning songs do. I don't know who your favorite rapper is, I was talking in general. But I am upset at this notion that just because a line is goofy it means its bad. This is more about sense of humor than anything. I love goofy lines because they display a certain mindstate that I approve.
May 30, 2022 There are ways to be funny/goofy besides puns and dad jokes. Eminem used to be great at that. Also they don't have to be forced into every song/verse. I'm sure people wouldn't talk so much s--- about Side B if the similie overload was only on Alfreds Theme for example.
