Jun 3, 2022 When It comes to Lyrics , MMLP2 is his most interestingly written album. Period. Musicaly, It Has a lot of problems but I still dare to call It a very good album. Revival has SOME well written stuff as well but not much new after MMLP2. Rather recycled ideas. Plus, unfortunately, a lot of "fun" ( cause for Dre, for some reason, Remind Me and Heat are fun somehow). On the other hand, when It comes to music itself, I prefer Revival, despite its s-----y choruses. I prefer Em's calmer flow and voice here. So, I don't know. I like them both. Kami and MTBMB are years ahead of those two when It comes to music, but none od them has as many compelingly written songs as MMLP2 and Revival.
Jun 3, 2022 MMLP2 sounded like it was written in the shadow of some impending disaster. A lot of the tracks have an edge of something cataclysmic to them... Love Game, Bad Guy, Rhyme or Reason, even Rap God, Desperation, Groundhog Day & Monster. There's this sense of looming wreckage about it. I'm not at all a fan of this album, but that coming-disaster quality made it interesting in a provocative way. It almost sounds like he was circling the content without really digging much into it. I don't relisten to this one on purpose. But with Revival I feel like he got his hands dirty. Maybe as an album some people didn't like the execution, for any number of (technological or engineering) reasons, and I get that. For me, it was the attempt I liked best. though it does feel incomplete, more than anything, Revival feels brave to me. If you disagree, I don't give a s---. I admire what he appeared to want to do with it. It's a different animal for sure, but it achieved something emotional he hadn't attempted successfully since the first MMLP. For this reason, these are my numbers 1 and 2 (not necessarily in that order). TES is a close third, because it covers the same sort of psychological ground as both. Nearly perfectly rendered, that one. Just incandescent.
