I suspect the combined effects of stress, depression, and drugs have atrophied his hippocampus (the part of the brain responsible for emotion) beyond the point of return. That's why his music has no emotion or soul anymore, and why we'll probably never get another Say Goodbye Hollywood, Cleanin' Out My Closet, No Apologies etc etc again. And before some jerk responds with Arose as a counterexample, that only proves you can't tell the difference between genuine heartfelt emotion and simulacrum. edit: Then again I could be underestimating the resilience of the human brain. A simpler explanation might be that he just drank too much Jesus juice. I can think of few things more damaging to the soul than giving up hate for faith in God.
