Nov 8, 2023 Ranking album covers: 10. Encore. It's a fine cover and I know the album is thematically linked to TES as kind of a continuation of the same creative vein but it's just boring to have essentially the same cover as your very last album. 9. MMLP2. While it is cool to see the house 13 years after MMLP, it was a weird decision to not have Em himself appear in the picture this time. It feels empty for that reason. 8. Kamikaze. Perfectly serviceable cover and decent homage but there's nothing more to it. 7. MTBMB. Also fine and nothing more. 6. Revival. People even clown the cover of this album but I actually think it's a decent idea in theory, drawing a comparison between Em's dissatisfaction with America and his dissatisfaction with himself. It's just a shame that the actual album didn't accomplish anything even a tenth that clever. 5. MMLP. Simple, but memorable and meaningful. First instance of the cover's primarily color very effectively capturing the mood of the album. 4. Relapse. Awesome idea, only problem is that Em doesn't look anywhere near menacing or badass enough, he looks like a 14 year old boy. 3. SSLP. Very artistic and well-composed image. Again captures the album's sound visually. 2. TES. Absolutely classic, and strikingly different from his first two covers just like the album itself. 1. Recovery. Amazing, just captures the album PERFECTLY, walking into the sunset except there is no sunset, just like how "victory" for Em isn't without its problems. Especially great because it was an accident, there actually was supposed to be a sunset but it was cold and cloudy on the day.
