It's been 10 years so I think it's about time I shared this story and some photos - the day I went to Eminem's house (story in comments)
r/Eminem - It's been 10 years so I think it's about time I shared this story and some photos - the day I went to Eminem's house
Right off the bat - I realize the title kinda sounds like the start of a really elaborate shitpost. It's not, I just couldn't come up with a title that was descriptive enough without being annoyingly long and this is what I landed on. I'll save you some time and tell you this much upfront to allow you to decide if you wanna read this whole thing: no, unfortunately I didn't get to meet the man himself, but yes, I made it to his house, got to meet some pretty cool people, and came out of it far from empty handed. If you want to save some amount of reading, you can skip to the part of my second comment that appears as a quote, which is a copy paste of my original Facebook post from when this happened back in 2014. It tells the story and that's it, the rest of my post is just context, extra details, some explaining, etc.

Anyway, while at work today I was listening to TES and reminiscing on the two times I've seen Em live, and how crazy the first time was, and I realized that aside from friends and family (and Facebook), I've never shared the story. There are some good reasons for that, but I think enough time has passed and things have changed that I can tell it, with a couple small omissions which I will explain. So for anyone interested, here's the story of when I went to Eminem's house. Obvious disclaimer here: what I did was super not cool and nobody should try to do this. I was a dumb kid and clearly hadn't grasped the concept of celebrity boundaries yet. Please, please, please, do not try to replicate this, of course I understand the allure but please respect the man's privacy.

So it's 2014 and Eminem and Rihanna have announced The Monster Tour. I'm 18 years old (19 by the time of the show), absolute superfan from the Toronto area, and this is my dream. I've got a part time job and a credit card with about a $3,000 limit, so naturally I do what any dumbass kid would do in this situation and spare no expense. Front row GA sold out immediately, so two tickets cost me about $900 on StubHub. Almost certainly could have saved a couple hundred dollars by waiting a few months to buy them, but I was scared they'd sell out even at resale, so I just bought them basically immediately. $800 hotel room for the weekend. Could have stopped there, but again, stupid kid with a credit and a dream. I'd found one of Em's addresses online and decided I was going to go there and, I don't f---ing know, see if he was home I guess?? My understanding at the time was that he had two homes in Michigan, the Kmart mansion and another in a gated community. The gated one was far less talked about than the mansion and had a very obvious barrier to entry, so I went with the mansion. Enter my next wildly irresponsible financial decision - I didn't have a car (it took us 6 busses to get from our hometown to the Detroit Greyhound terminal where we met a longtime online friend who took us out for the first day and dropped us off at our hotel) and his house was over an hour outside of Detroit. So I rent a car from whatever rental agency was nearby our hotel. Being 19 years old at the time I paid almost $400 to rent a car for all of 6 f---ing hours. And thus, with the hotel, tickets, car, and food/travel/concert merch expenses, my card was toast. It took me 4 years to pay that thing off and another 2 years to rebuild my credit and I've never regretted it for a second.

I know this is somewhat long winded but I figure if you're reading this you're interested, so I might as well give all the details. Now, it's been 10 years, so some of the finer points have faded away. Thankfully I was an absolute social media whor- back then (and as I read that back I realize that term definitely has a different meaning now, I was not doing p---, I just posted every tiny detail of my life lmao) and I posted almost everything about what was happening in real time. In the interest of historical accuracy, I'm just going to copy and paste my post from that day (or rather two days, that will make sense shortly) and before you read this just please remember, I was 19 and while none of what I said was a lie, I was very excited about it all and this very much reads as a 2014 teenager Facebook bloggy-type post, a little cringe but hey, it is what it is, a reflection of who I was at the time. Everything you read here is from the original post in 2014, except for our names which are edited out. Here it is:

    HOLY s--- HOLY s--- HOLY s--- HOLY s---

okay so yesterday i went to eminem's house which was about an hour and 15 minutes from our hotel (that was the secret location i mentioned yesterday) we waited outside his gates for like 20 minutes, me buzzing his pager thing hoping he'd answer it or someone would show up. after 20 minutes of chilling on his driveway, a truck pulls up.... big scary looking guy who turns out to be one of eminem's security dudes. he asked what we were doing and i told him we were hoping i'd be able to meet eminem and he kinda laughed and said you thought you could just drive here and meet him (not in a rude way like a funny way) he opened eminem's gate and then stopped his truck, got out and started talking to me. i told him all about how we got here and s--- and he said he couldn't get eminem out but he had a s--- ton of memorabilia and merchandise that was never released to the public or was really rare. he said he'd meet us today to show us. let me remind you that he opened eminem's locked gate so this wasn't just some random a--- talking s---

SOOOOOOOOOOO after talking to him on the phone a lot today he ended up sending a friend of his instead because he lives so far. so this guy waits in our hotel lobby for almost 2 hours because the other guy didn't give him our number, just our names. so we're walking out for dinner and we hear "(friend) AND (me)???? (friend)??? (me)???" and turn around and we look and it's this guy who was like 3x the size of the other guy. turns out that this guy was eminem's bodyguard from 1999-2010. he quit for family reasons that i'm not gonna talk about because they were personal but he's on good terms with eminem still. he showed us a bunch of pictures and selfies on his phone of him and eminem, so this guy wasn't some random a--- talking s--- either

so he brings us out to his van and there's alllllll these shirts and jerseys and a hat and s---, and he's showing me and i'm looking and i picked one up and asked how much he wanted for it (i only have $300 cash to last me today tomorrow and saturday) and he said "i don't know man make me an offer" and i didn't really know so i just said i can't, i don't know what this is worth it's kinda priceless. he's like "y'know i was gonna say $100 but, just gimme $60" and i'm like HOLY s---? so i give him $60 and keep looking as he's making small talk with (friend). picked up another, said "how about this?" and he's like "s--- you want another one? you know what man take both for $100" so like omg? i give him $40 and..... keep looking as he's talking to (friend). i pull out a third and say "how about this?" and he's so surprised that i want so many that he says "man just $50 each it's cool" so i take that third one and then say well that's all i can afford (all that was left was the hat and one jersey that was a little bit run down and had a stain) and then he says "take the hat too man" like omg??? so now i have 3 shirts and this hat

we talked for a long time, but among what we talked about was experiences he had with eminem and the team, what he does now, etc. etc. we asked if many people ever go to eminem's like we did and he said no, never because it's so far out and nobody knows where it is. he also told us about every article of clothing that he sold me. one shirt was brand new (tags still on) it was produced commercially (lots of them) but they were never put in stores (i guess they just held onto them to sorta hand out or something) so they were pretty rare. the next is a jersey that he wore on the tour. they just made one for each bodyguard and anyone else was that was working with eminem on the tour so that one is a HUGE f---ing DEAL. the third one was only sold on a few tour dates from the anger management tour, so you could only have bought it at that show on one of those 2 or 3 nights, so that's great too. he didn't really say anything about the hat except for the fact that it was "really rare you'd never find this online"

conclusion: i now have 4 things that nobody in the world will ever be able to buy, some of which were made for specific employees of eminem, met a current and a former employee of eminem, was on eminem's f---ing driveway, and am officially the f---ing best i have accomplished 5000% of what i thought i would

will upload pics of the shirts and hat to instagram tonight and got 2 pictures with the bodyguard that will be uploaded when i get home on saturday

Couple other small details, the driver that we talked to at his gate was related to someone in D12, I can't remember how or to who for the life of me, but I want to say he was Kuniva's cousin? But again, I'm not certain of that at all, only of the fact that he was related somehow to one of them. He also offered us "backstage passes" for a "couple grand," now in hindsight, even though this guy was clearly legit because he was driving into Eminem's house, were these backstage passes legit or was he just trying to hustle us, I'm not sure. It sounds a bit too good to be true, but d--- if I didn't call everyone I could think of back home desperately trying to get the money wired to me, and my friend was even nice enough to offer to scalp his ticket to contribute to getting one single backstage pass for me (bless his heart but he was not an Em fan at all so he really didn't care, total metalhead, I had originally bought the tickets for me and my girlfriend who was a fan but we broke up before the day came and I offered him the second ticket for free just so I'd have someone to go with) but of course that didn't work out. I actually still have his number saved in my old iCloud account, no idea if it's still his or not, I've never tried to contact him since that weekend. I also for some reason didn't mention in my post that it wasn't just the one "truck" (it was actually a black limo tinted SUV, my grandpa always had SUV's and called them trucks for some reason which is why I referred to it as a truck in my post) that pulled into his house. He pulled up first, opened the gate from inside the car, and we had our exchange. My friend and I sat in the car for a few minutes after he went up the driveway and just before we were about to leave, a convoy of 3 more similar SUV's pulled in and went straight up the driveway. Obviously I couldn't see anyone because of the tint, but I think it's a pretty safe assumption that Em was in one of them - which is pretty f---ing cool considering they drove right up and past us. 19 year old me was absolutely f---in geeked lmao "Eminem was definitely just 10 feet away from us and probably looked right at us!!"

Also guess I should share the reasons I figured this was okay to post now. There are two, the most important one being, Eminem sold this house a while ago now, so my story shouldn't encourage anyone to go there themselves, unless you wanna see the front gate of a house that Eminem used to live in I guess. The second one is less of a reason and more of an omission that makes me more comfortable sharing, which is that although we took some pictures on the drive up his street and while we were at his gate ringing the buzzer, I didn't include those in the post. His current (at the time) bodyguard/driver saw us taking pictures and asked us not to, so we stopped and they were also excluded from my Facebook album of the trip. Only a couple close friends have seen them, all in person so they never left my hard drive, and it's gonna stay that way. If you really want to see the house, there are much better pictures readily available online, where you can see the house itself rather than some skinny kid in front of a gate.

So, there it is. Hopefully this is somewhat interesting to some of y'all, if not then I hope you didn't read this entire thing lol. Like I said, I was a total disrespectful idiot for doing this, but at the same time it was a really cool experience that turned out alright and is a memory I'll cherish for the rest of my life. What I do encourage everyone to do is see this dude live the first chance you get. Aside from the obvious fact that he's getting old and doesn't like touring in the first place, he puts on an amazing show that's worth every cent, even if you get absolutely rinsed buying second hand tickets from some scumbag scalper like I did the first time around. I've seen him twice now (second time was at Boston Calling in 2018, drove 12 hours because that was the closest show in his festival run during that era) and the range of emotions is just wild. Seeing him rap live is impressive as h---, the Big Proof chant during Like Toy Soldiers will make any fan cry, and perhaps most importantly, he talks a fair amount in between songs and he is funny as h---. If there's one thing you take away from this post - see him live as soon as you can!!

I think my contact should reach out to Em's team and add you into the new Stan documentary. I can't help you if you can't see we've received more Em news in the past 4 weeks than the past 3 years combined. Insufferable.
