May 29, 2021 It's fine if that's what you like about rap, but to say listening to hip-hop for the beats is "wrong" is insane. Hip-hop was literally founded on (break)beats and the DJ/producer was the central figure and viewed as more important than the actual rapper in early rap. Obviously many things have changed in the past 40 years, but calling the beat an extra or nonessential component is a bizarre take. The beat is, at a minimum, an important vessel to help convey the tone and emotion of the song. It takes rap lyrics beyond poetry and makes it into music.

May 29, 2021 Where I am going with this is to target the people who overlook music just because it has a bad beat. I did not mean to say beats are bad, of course it's part of what makes a song a song instead of yes, spoken word poetry. But I met enough kids these days in their 20s who told me lyrics are whack. It all comes down to a hot beat and a catchy hook. That that's all you need. See, that part I have a real problem with. So don't take my post as attacking Instrumentals/Beats it wasn't meant to be that. I just have to always reiterate where I stand when people start telling me about beats etc In the end it's only just my opinion. That I value lyricism over a hot beat with whack lyrics and a catchy chorus.
