Jun 4, 2024 Speaking of my beautiful languange, always funny to see @NotSoSlimFranky , it means not so smart Franky in dutch. Same way @Boos means angry and @jankland (jank) means cry lol
Jun 4, 2024 I'd go back further. The identity crisis came after Relapse. That project was his big return, back to formula, made in-house with Dr. Dre and it did not hit. His camp is so insular that they must have been so blind-sided by the response. The pivot he made in that year into Recovery is insane, and it wasn't all positive either. He more-or-less left those sessions yelling himself horse with trailor trash puns over mainstream production. And then he brings back Shady every other project.
Jun 4, 2024 The way I see it, the problems truly started with Recovery because that introduced the poppy sound, then continued with MMLP2 because that introduced the lack of musical direction, but somehow both of those albums manage to have enough good songs regardless to not be truly bad albums. Then Revival comes along and we see what should've probably happened long before then. It just took multiple albums for one of them to actually turn out terrible because Em is talented enough to make an inherently bad concept at least listenable, or even kind of good.
Jun 4, 2024 disagree, and its about classics not which albums are better (relapse is my favorite eminem album, it ain't a classic though)
Jun 4, 2024 There isn’t very much good material to compare it against on that s-----y album. So even the bad songs will sound good when the other tracks are horrible. It really lowers the bar. Relapse for example. The album was so poorly received at the time he had to actually scrap an entire album and even apologized to fans on the follow-up album. What other artist has done that? Fast foward all these years later after releasing even worse albums then relapse, suddenly people think relapse sounds good in comparison to the other s--- he has put out. Legacy is completely ruined with the sausage flying out his a--- rhyme. It’s not great but in comparison to survival tier it is better I guess ♂️
Jun 4, 2024 Not sure where the OG post is from, but both posts are spot on. I agree with both statements. He was truly trying to be something he's not. Then the rappity rap and chopper flows really hurt him as well. He's good at it, but it's just not his sound. Every once in a while, it has sounded good, but too much of a bad sound for him. I could only imagine how hard it is to keep coming up with fresh ideas and lyrics though. I'm happy we got some good songs out of this Identity crisis, but it did result in some messy albums for sure. Also - The singles selctions and feature selections were terrible during these times. That really hurt the albums as well. Relapse was too much of an initial shock with the lyrics and accents to take as a comeback album. Recovery would have been a better comeback album and then releasing Relapse after Recovery. Pretty amazing that he was able to put together MTBMB though. It is an incredible album that far into his career. One of my favorites production and sound wise for sure.
Jun 4, 2024 the true classic here is Relapse, many haters have turned into glazers of that album, it's only a matter of time and listening to it again if you still hate it It felt like I was insane on an island back in '09 but many people have come around (whether that's because his later projects have been worse or because it genuinely aged well is a matter of opinion I guess)
Jun 4, 2024 That other track off revival is pretty close to so far as worst s--- ever put out. Forget the name of it. I think he’s talking about eating worms or something in the chorus.
