I’m not saying any form of criticism is misguided due to generational issues though. I’ve been critical of artists like Yachty & Lil Pump — that’s fine. When you start generalizing & dismissing an entire sub-genre because of their sound/style, that’s when I think it starts to become a generational issue & bias seeps in. There is no set criteria of how to critique hip-hop music or music in general. Different sub-genres of hip-hop are going to serve different purposes. For instance, Gucci Mane’s music doesn’t serve the same purpose as Nas’s music so why would I critique it the same way? It’d be like me watching an action movie & criticizing it because it didn’t make me laugh. If you can’t recognize that then you do have a particular bias against trap/southern hip-hop artists of today. You can’t go around criticizing all hip-hop music with a ‘one size fits all’ way of thinking. You can’t criticize an artist or a sub-genre for not being something it’s not trying to be (if that makes sense). Some hip-hop artists care more about cadences, flows, vocals etc. rather than rhyme scheme or message & that’s okay. We shouldn’t be bashing artists for being different & continuing to evolve the genre. The fact that you think their music has “little creativity” I think is just another example of a bias.

There’s 0 chance that someone like Future, Gucci or Migos will be forgotten. I mean look at hip-hop today lol. They’ve fathered what the genre is now. They’re well respected by other hip-hop artists in the genre. They will 100% be looked at as legends.
