Desiigner in panda sounded like future, and you couldn't understand s--- that he was saying.
Noow look at his most recent music and that video he made talking about people saying he fell off. He speaks english properly now.

Most people in the know who use that aren't referring to Southern rappers as a whole, or lacking knowledge on Southern slang. OutKast are one of the most acclaimed and respected rap outfits of all time, for example, and there's plenty. Southern slang is not a new phenomena in rap.

I'm not a lazy user of terms bro and I don't think most are in this case - it's not about slang or Southern rappers. It's about enunciation, clarity and expression. Not saying those aspects are objectively better, but the term mumble is a fair and objective term for how certain rappers like Yacthy often express some of their (imo) really terrible lyrics.

So I think it's a bit of a cop-out to say anybody who uses that term doesn't understand Southern rap, or it's about their slang. It's not. It's about the quality of the music and their expression. Which in a lot of people's opinion is just... bad. And mumbling fits the style of expression a lot of them do.

Also - I've seen that video.

I don't give a s--- about 'real or fake'. I just care about good or bad, and I think people who think s--- like Yacthy or some current trash will one day be considered great rap and that it's just a case of what is currently 'real or fake' or that kind of argument... I think are misguided.

Like many fad styles and waves in rap before, I think it's more so a case of that. Because it's just bad quality lyrics and songs, it's not about a style preference - a lot of the lines and ideas are idiotic and the songs and themes lack thought and creativity. So, s--- like that doesn't last regardless of era.

In 20 years people will be talking about Kendrick Lamar. They wont be talking about the mumble rappers, well, only in the context of 'remember how wack that period was?'.

So you think a vast majority of hip-hop fans who use the term “Mumble rap” are familiar with southern hip-hop & aren’t using it in a derogatory way what so ever? You really believe that? You don’t have to go far to see people using this term in a derogatory sense. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, forums etc. There are plentiful people who will use this term to justify calling a particular artist trash. There are people who won’t even give artists a chance because they’ve been labeled “Mumble rappers” I mean, even prominent hip-hop heads like Charlemagne or Funk Master Flex will use the term to degrade this generations hip-hop artists. It’s very clear that it’s meant to be a derogatory term because it’s almost always used in a negative connotation.

People who use it as a descriptor aren’t any better because like I said, it’s lazy. You may not be using it in a derogatory sense but you know it’s primary usage & you still choose to use it. It’s only contributing to the problem. You didn’t/don’t see people calling [early] Em or Danny Brown “nasal rap” because of their voices. That’s bevause they fit into the mold of what “real hip-hop fans” think the genre should be.

I’m not sure why you’re focused on Yachty but the blind hatred trap music/southern hip-hop gets is almost certainly a generational thing. I mean, this whole concept of X generation is better than this generation has been going on forever. People will almost always favor the music they grew up with. Artists like Future, Gucci, Migos etc. will undoubtedly be looked at as legends/trend setters of the genre along with someone like Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick Lamar himself has endlessly praised artists like Future & his craft as an artist. There’s no reason or evidence to support the notion people will look back & be like “oh, this generation was trash.”
