Dec 22, 2025 Another thing I just recently noticed is that Difficult and Like Toy Soldiers both have the same descending piano chord progressions for the first 4 bars of the melody. Wonder if that was a conscious thing considering the Proof/Toy Soldiers death connection
Dec 22, 2025 Actually I think the singing is late 01 or maybe even 02. The voice seems closer to something like Say What You Say, a bit deeper. The verse and "da-da-da" are probably from 2000, with the latter maybe being a remnant from an earlier take of the singing half of the song.
Dec 22, 2025 That's true - the way he lines up multis now seems more obvious and like other rappers do, more pedestrian. Back in like 97-02, even after that, but especially then, it was like... less obvious or more surprising phrasing and stretching rhymes without feeling like he was doing that.

Dec 23, 2025 This is plausible, because I’m sure there’s a quote somewhere where he’s talking about the sample issues and he says “I had to re-sing it and everything”. Not a clue where that quote could be found though but pretty sure he said it. that’s why I’ve never been fully convinced on the Weeps remakes. For all we know the original could have been in a different key, and on the remakes, the chorus does always sound off. edit: found it, was in Rolling Stone apparently:

Wouldn’t really pass it as a “period connection” though, considering TIC was recorded early 02 at the very latest, and Smack You had to be April 03 at the very earliest, going by the release date of Ja Rules “Loose Change”. So there’s at least a year between those two songs, Nice try tho Spatch.
