If FIFA hadn't change the eligibility rules a lot of good/great/stars players would have been stuck playing for the country they were born in. And probably wouldn't have been able to ever play a World Cup. Sterling comes to mind.
And even in the odd chance their team qualified for one, they wouldn't get too far, like Rakitic.

And that list is just for the 2022 WC.

My whole idea was always that you should play for the country you were born in, so I'm not even sure why Messi and Mbappe are part of the converstaion anyway, they're doing that and already won cups for their country's teams lol

I can understand mbappé rather playing for france but players like ziyech and mazraoui picking morroco over the dutch team still surprises me. Even though they probably have their reasons.

Fair enough, so the Mbappe thing was nonsense?

Regarding the point, a lot of people recognise that assimilation to a country & gaining citizenship is enough to make you from there. Nationalities aren’t ethnicities.

Me and my family migrated to Italy in 2002. Initially, our plan was to stay there for good. I got my citizenship.
And I was pretty f---ing good at football. I probably would've had more chances of actually making it there, than here in Argentina.
So I can understand why players decide to play for other national teams, perhaps they think the country they were actually born in would never be interested in them because there're too many (better) options.

my reason for wanting people to play for their birth countries is that it makes the whole thing more competitive and "balanced" in a way, there would be more variety in competitions in theory, some people would rather choose to play for the country that "fed" them rather than the one they were born in, which is fair but I think it hurts the "show" in a way

It's been a rule for years.. I remember Ryan Giggs could have played for Wales or England, he chose Wales.

Yes, but they updated it in 2020 and made it even more bland = worse.

Lol always ruining the game. Football has become so boring to watch if I'm honest. It's all pretty much one style of play in the last 10 years... Nowhere near as exciting as it used to be.

I feel you, didn't enjoy football that much after 2005-2006...it literally doesn't feel the same for me. That's why I said I'm not a fan of Messi, not a fan of Ronaldo either.

I don't have any player after 2006 in my personal top 100 players that I've watched. I simply dislike footbal and I force myself to watch the big competitions just to not miss out, I only rely on watching and supporting my local club, going to games and watching the internal league.

Yeah I totally understand that. It kinda shows a selfish mindset to neglect ones country, but it’s also understandable if you reside in another country from pursuing greater opportunities & have assimilated, you probably feel disconnected from your birthplace, also want to represent the country that you live & work in as well as finding it inconvenient to move back for international games. There’s also the competitive aspect of finding more success with some of the European countries.

I think the only way it’ll change is by force if the football regulatory bodies decide to change the system.

The game lacks "aggressiveness" in a way, playstyles used to be a lot bolder a couple of decades ago

Every team now plays the "pep way" but that's since like 2015. 2006 was still great for expressive football but to each their own.

and tbf, playing for your birth country, no matter how good you are, doesn't guarantee said country anything, look at Haaland for example, but y'know, I'd rather have talented players giving their weaker birth country a fighting chance rather than warming the bench at a strong european national team

I don't blame those who choose to play for other national teams tho, I don't see it as "treason" or nothing like that, it IS a sport at the end of the day albeit a very passionate one

Many players were special to watch during that time period, I could name hundreds.

These days it can be difficult to sit through a whole game (and I'm not just talking United lol)

Bro he was the example I meant to add but I had a brainfart

It’s tragic he couldn’t compete in the Euros. But if they changed the rules teams like that would have more of a fighting chance wouldn’t they.
