I'm not sure you guys realize how much music came out in "the 90s" lol. If you're choosing to single out artists who fit your hypothesis, you have to acknowledge that. Look at the major festivals: guys like Earl, Vince, Killer Mike and El-P, Big Boi, Freddie Gibbs, Danny Brown, etc are some of the most beloved rappers in the country.

Where else besides the underground do we really care about lyrics? No one seems to cares if Future/Thug spits a wack bar, they got a great delivery. I would love for lyrics to come back, but its not what it used to be. Kanye's new album had pretty a--- lyrics, minus a funny/relatable bar here and their, but that albums considered still pretty great....

    See my post above yours.

(Also, Future and especially Thug are phenomenally good songwriters.)

Run the Jewels is one of the most popular rap acts in America. You can't really look to album sales as the main metric anymore (but even if you did, Kevin Gates is the breakout star of the year and he's more "lyrical" than almost anyone in any era).

try listening every once in a while, actually listening to the entire song and what it means lyrically

I get people like Freddie Gibs, RTJ, Ab Soul, Lupe etc. for lyrics. But you never see them as "the hottest out" or the one that get 50 reaction videos on youtube. Its always people like Thugger/Future that get that title. And they aint the ones with great lyrics, but musically they dope. I'm just trying to say I agree with Koolo, how we today seem to care more about music rather then lyrics. MMLP2 had dope lyrics minus a horrible corny bar here and their, but everyone complained about the production....

all of them. you're just not interested in their narrative or the style they use to deliver it

Sing about me and How Much A Dollar Cost is more lyrical then just about anything Tech has spit.

@Koolo I think we're just getting older to the point where we don't like the sound of new music, or kids on our lawn.
