so if young thug is so great, why is he so polarizing? it seems like if someone is really good at something........the praise would be more clear cut/unanimous.......as opposed to it being 50/50 which is clearly the case for thug.

that's one of the biggest differences between someone like kanye and thug. the consensus is that kanye is a great rapper and not everyone who likes hip hop loves him.........but it seems like most people do. he's widely considered to be a good/great artist.

why isn't thug like that? by the way, i'm not trying to make this a thug vs. kanye thing. i'm simply giving you an example of why music can be a hard thing to make an argument for

:wellsht: Thinking he misses the boat on virtually all contemporary rap (which, you know, is mostly what he reviews considering he makes reviews...now?) is no more a "preference" than you thinking he's good at reviewing contemporary rap. Like, I don't even understand what you're arguing here and how it would be applicable to me and not you.

I'm not trying to be a d-ck, but I thought Fantano was a good reviewer only right when I started paying attention to rap criticism. Start paying attention to bylines, following certain authors, and delving further into criticism and you'll start to see how bad a lot of his reviews are.

I just mean you can read a compelling argument for the quality of something you don't like and acknowledge that there's value in it without liking it, no?

@Big Dangerous I'm not saying there's zero value in what fantano does, but I am saying that there are SO many better rap critics out there right now.

Yeah true, I can't comment on how he stacks up to other rap critiques I was simply taking a fair guess at why I thought you may have a bias against Fantano, considering you never really go into why you believe that.

I'd love to know where the h--- you pulled "my opinion of ____ is just as much an opinion as you're opinion of _______" out of my post suggesting maybe there was another reason as to why you dislike melon's rap reviewing because he has a preference against a portion of music you enjoy. That one really perplexed me, sounded like you weren't that concerned with responding to my message but moreso coming up with wordy jargon lol

    "Fantano sucks"

"No Fantano doesn't s---, maybe you think he sucks cause he has an unfavorable preference of something you like"

"Well me thinking he sucks is no more a preference than you thinking he doesn't s---"

    sure--that's fair enough.

just cause i'm curious---WHY do you think there are so many BETTER rap critics out there than fantano? i'm not saying you're wrong---i'm just curious WHY you feel that way. what makes these other rap critics superior to fantano?????

What I meant was: if I have a bias against him because I disagree with him, wouldn't you also have bias toward him because you tend to agree with him? I just didn't think it was really fair to brush off me thinking he misses the boat on a lot of things as a "preference" just because I disagree with him any more than it would be a "preference" for you to like him because you agree with him. But I will say I like my reviews written and not in video form, so that is fair to say I have a preference in that regard.

I'm not really sure what "big words" you're referring to..."bylines?" "Contemporary?" "Criticism?" But anyway I'm on mobile rn but I'll watch this one and maybe a couple others tomorrow and expand upon why I think he misses the boat cuz admittedly I've maybe watched 2-3 of his vids in the past year.

I didn't suggest you used big words, where did that come from? Lol

I was mostly referring to your choice to address my talk of a possible bias towards Fantano's reviews with an oddball "my preference that this is no more than your preference that that"-- which I sort of get now, and also you're extended and seemingly unnecessary explanation of contemporary rap ("which is mostly what he reviews considering he makes reviews...now?"). Like I'm sure no one needed this to be elaborated on or am I missing something lol

Sorry, on mobile and meant "wordy jargon" not "big words," which I don't rly see in that post.

The part in parentheses was responding to the fact that you said I don't like him because he doesn't like a lot of contemporary rap so I was just kinda like "but...he started in the Internet age, so all he reviews is contemporary rap" and I'd think almost anyone who gives poor reviews to a lot of contemporary rap was a poor critic, because there's tons of good rap coming out.

Sorry, I think this just was a string of misunderstandings between us lol.

Why not explain why you believe he is lacking when it comes to contemporary rap critique instead of generalizing and concluding that 'oh, he rates the majority of so and so badly, he must be a poor critic'-- which is what I was challenging you to elaborate on when suggesting that maybe you have a bias against him because he has an unfavorable preference in regards to modern music you may enjoy.

Get into the meat there BC, you're better than concluding someone is poor at critiquing because they review a subset of modern music unfavorably.
