#29: Animal Collective - Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished [9.2/10]
I f---ing love Animal Collective. It's funny you requested this one around that time, cause I was just bumping MPP and Panda's Person Pitch, all part of my melancholic soundtrack when summer's coming to a close. Animal Collective to the uninitiated, can be very daunting to listen to since they're amongst the most experimental and unconventional artists around, however it's so rewarding when they get it right as they've done for the majority of their music. And this album, is where it all started.
I still find it difficult coming up with the right words to describe the myriad of noises that imbue from here, I remember first listening to this high outta of my mind in college and it felt like a tonic for my brain. It's sort of like if Aphex Twin took PCP, looked into a kaleidoscope and then went into the studio to exorcise these creative demons inside; it's psychedelic but like if psychedelic had a knife clenched between it's teeth especially during the first portion of the album. The engineering is off the f---ing chains, just when you're captivating by one instrument another one comes out of the blue, all in crystal clear quality (pretty wild considering this is 20 years old now). It's a journey into some warped dimension, but it's well worth the travel, especially when you finally reach the final destination.Last edited: Aug 24, 2020Enez, dkdnfbdjdkdddjdjfvcgfl, Ordinary Joel and 1 other person like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

It wouldn't even be an insult to me calling me an uncultured swine when it comes to Australian hip-hop. I've only seen you & Coco rave about this man as the second coming of Christ in the odd post here and there, I'm just thinking heh they must just be on that Down Under Caine again. But at exactly 7:32PM Eastern Time, Sunday August 23rd...my life changed when I hit play...
Never before had I experienced at first hand a true virtuoso at work like the way Kerser goes. The way this dude raps, I can just picture Kerser wrestling sharks for his morning workout and then injecting inhuman amounts of Heroin into his bloodstream just cause why not. And while he's on that high, he's spitting venom that would make a black mamba's feel like a brisk summer's breeze. The sort of catharsis I got when I heard this album through was the same as when Saint Paul saw the light on the long, long road to Damascus, we need to spread the word of Kerser all over the universe. Australia is the best, I feel like liking everyone of Joel's posts, digging up @threee wherever the h--- he is and probably do a line of snow with the rest of you crazy fools.Last edited: Aug 24, 2020DKC, RetiredAccount, SHUDEYE and 1 other person like this. -

Personally Shut Em Down is my favourite project from Onyx, they captured lighting in a bottle whilst crossing between Mainstream tracks as well as their gritty street s---.... having said that tho, their fall-off was pretty big after this album unfortunately.lil uzi vert stan, Sav Stanfield, Fire Squad and 1 other person like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

#12: The Anxiety - The Anxiety [7/10]
I had a little bit of trepidation heading into this to tell you the truth. Anytime one of Big Willie's kids does music, I pray it finally turns me into a fan or I'll leave facepalming at what I just heard. Jaden in particular has a lot of room for growth, he bites a little too deep into his influences so much that ends up being a generic mimicry instead of finding his own lane for instance. Willow on the other hand, had quietly been building her catalog, truth be told that last album she dropped last year...was a head-scratching experience to say the least.
This time around, she decided to go the indie punk route. I almost imagined that someone like XXXTENTACION would have made an album like this at some in his career, which is where I think Willow & Tyler got the inspiration from. She has a long way to go as far as getting her message across, but I do appreciate the intention of what she wanted to portray. The music itself is where it actually surprised me, there were some great drum & guitar work in the back and it gets even a bit lo-fi as you progress later in the album.
As a Therapist myself, the chaos from the beginning tracks really captures the nature of what Anxiety does to you in that instance. We've faced a trial as a species with this pandemic, some of us being more effected than others, with exaggerated truths now taking form of anxieties that we most likely have to physically face at some point. But, it's gonna be alright, these are just thought processes that our highly capable brains produce to protect us from harm. Whether or not that was the point Willow & Tyler wanted to get across, it's important that we have this conversation to begin with.Last edited: Aug 15, 2020lil uzi vert stan, Sav Stanfield, Mraczewsky and 1 other person like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

#10: Classified - Classified [6.7/10]
I actually recognized this album, mostly since Classified has worked with people I'm familiar with like Saukrates, Kardinal Official and.... that fool Madchild of all people lol. Funny thing about Canadian rappers is that they actually embrace the cheesiness of doing mainstream songs, the singles on here sounded so much like something I'd have expected from Gym Class Heroes and the such.
Truthfully, I don't think this album was for me. I can appreciate some of the fascinating production cues, Classified isn't too shabby behind the mic, but it's the direction of the album that unfortunately didn't sit well with me. It's a bit frenzied, uneven actually, some albums are able to sort of contain that chaos in a bubble to their advantage. Unfortunately it wasn't the case here, felt more like a combination of songs (albeit some great ones at it) than a cohesive project in a sense. Nevertheless I appreciate you for recommending this, I can see the appeal, but I don't think it was ever meant for me.Last edited: Aug 15, 2020lil uzi vert stan, Sav Stanfield, Ordinary Joel and 1 other person like this. -

@Donkey Kong Cuntry
Huge thank you for this dude, I haven't had the chance to ever get around to Dre's catalog, I've only heard I Hate You With A Passion & Tears of a Clown in full. I don't know if I'll get more recommendations from the Bay, so I might as well share a funny story about my last 8th Grade dance. One of my classmate's dad was given the reigns behind the DJ Booth, to say he was dreadful would be an understatement. No one was dancing to the Hokey-Pokey and all these ancient Karen-friendly songs, everyone just looked at the empty dance floor in disgust, it looked like something out of a cheesy prom flick. Who knows how, or why it happened, but after The Beatle's Twist & Shout ended, E-40's Tell Me When To Go blasted through the speakers and everyone spilled onto the dance floor and our dance was saved!
That hit single, has nothing to do with this album experience. Yet, that adventurous spirit that seems to be infectious in everyone from the Oakland area exists as I jumped into this dystopian, pimped out world that Andre created. This is for full disclosure a coke rap album (something we seem to have a shared appreciation for), but despite the usually grim depictions that sub-genre has generated, this was actually sort of unorthodox. His punches are clever, the stories are vivid, his flows are unconventional and just when I thought I've heard it all this dude belts out a g.d. ballad in track 3.
Altogether I was pleasantly surprised at the range this album contained, heck it makes me appreciate his legendary peer Mac Dre's eccentricities all that much more. If any of you have 6 minutes to spare, go listen to this incredible tune.Last edited: Aug 11, 2020Sav Stanfield, BIGFOOT, Ordinary Joel and 1 other person like this. -
