I watched my first Carax and Kiarostami features this week.
Holy Motors (2012) is jaw dropping on a pure technical and talent level, but in the vein of similar meta films-about-life-about-filmmaking (8 1/2, Synecdoche, N.Y.), I found it a little too distant to really resonate with me. I wanted the director to get a little more personal and vulnerable to tie everything together. As it stands, I found it to be less than the sum of its parts. Objectively brilliant execution though. Masterful. 3/5
Like Someone In Love (2011) is such a calming experience. F&W's recent piece on cuts being both cheaply thrilling and anxiety inducing really made me appreciate the brutal patience of this. The shots are so powerful without ever feeling contrived. A simple pan is as flashy as it gets, letting composition be its foundation. The camera just sits there and observes what feels like a genuine slice of life. The dialogue is soft spoken magic, completely natural and yet deliberate. If it's boring, it's because we expect movies to be artificial and full of affectations. This denies all of that as excess or cheating or plain deception. Reality should be enough, and it is. 4/5Last edited: Dec 5, 2015Pinhead, FilmAndWhisky and Twan like this. -

Everyone borrows from everyone. An entire film can be derivative, like a Tarantino film, but it's still original. You can't replay a person's style without making it your own. There's no such thing as pure originality. Originality can be borrowed and tweaked. I'd say your description of unoriginality is simply a characteristic of an uninteresting auteur who is less than who he copies from. But maybe some people will think he borrows and makes better.Rowjay Stan, Charlie Work and Vahn like this. -

The Assassin was exceptionally beautiful. I mean, there are beautiful movies and then there's The Assassin. In addition to its stunning imagery, Hsiao-Hsien's characteristic pacing and the measured movement of his actors, including the sudden yet graceful sequences of violence, convey an alluring, dreamlike quality and his attention to detail vividly brings the past to life. However, as transporting as I found the film to be overall, if I have any hesitation, I don't know if it packed the same thematic or emotional heft as some of HHH's other work. Still a major work regardless. Would play an Assassin's Creed video game as Shu Qi.Vahn, Pinhead and FilmAndWhisky like this. -

Cinema's language is the moving image + sound. A recording of time. Everything else exists in another language: the language of theater, literature, and other arts. All content and dialogue in a film is a negation of pure cinema; only poetry uses verbal language in a lyrical/cinematic form. Everything else, from verbal communication to story content, exists in another language. Aesthetics of film form are cinema's language, and IMO far more important than content. The same as how a person's musicality in vocals matters more than what they say. What they say is exposition/journalism; how they sing is art. Most people watch films for the entertaining stories, though, and cinema is not often seen as an art because of how widely it reaches all audiences as a form of entertainment. Sometimes I let myself view film like this; there's no escaping it.Rowjay Stan, Narsh and Vahn like this. -

@Narsh if only u knew someone in pr who had a strong advertising network...
One final note, as it seems I'm outweighed by the "aesthetics" here, which is fine. Always thought of film as a language, and more to the point in dialogue with other movies either because of time period or genre what have you. That's my horse, and genuinely a pretty fascinating way to interpret movies as part of a larger whole imo @Twan @FilmAndWhiskyFilmAndWhisky, Twan and Narsh like this. -

For the record, I actively dislike Foxcatcher...funereal slog towards the inevitable, hitting upon obvious psychological and metaphorical points along the way (It's about America!). Capote is pretty cool I guess.Goku187, lil uzi vert stan and Narsh like this.
