So I saw Hard to Be a God last night...All of the early word I had read about it was basically true, though it had a bit more humor than I was expecting, albeit absolutely perverse.
Shot on location in h---, it's like if Fellini, instead of capturing la dolce vita, decided to point his roving camera towards a s----stained, medieval nightmare (It is indeed disgusting for its entire 170 minutes). The depth of its mise en scene and the scope of its world-building are astounding. One gets the sense while watching it that if the camera were to move indefinitely in any direction, one would still be stuck in this grotesque hellhole that German created. Despite its expansive canvas, German often keeps the camera uncomfortably close to the characters and the environment. When coupled with the characters' frequent tendency to stare directly into the camera and, many times, seemingly address it, it conveys a disconcerting "You are there" sense of immersion, but one in which the viewer is unable to change the world nor turn away from it. In this regard, it puts us in the same shoes as Rumata, the lead character and "God" in the title.
At times, the film can walk the line between grueling and captivating, but I've certainly never seen a film like it and probably won't again for a long, long time.Last edited: Feb 7, 2015 -

Components of your average Armond White review:
- Myriad of non-sequitur references to other movies and directors
- Almost no meaningful discussion of the film at hand
- Cheap shots at random filmmakers, unrelated to the film being reviewed
- Insults of his readers' taste and intelligence
- Misspellings of actors' and directors' names
- Numerous arguments against "hipster nihilists"
Ed Gonzalez, on the other hand, and Slant in general are among the best around.

Guys... in one hour, I will be seeing Inherent Vice. It's crazy I remember being in grammar school hearing about Magnolia and Boogie Nights. I remember seeing Punchdrunk Love and being BLOWN away by it. I'd just turned 17 I think, and that fall was awesome for me seeing R-rated films (also saw Rules of Attraction and Adaptation... great period for movies imo)
Of course, I remember being blown away by There Will Be Blood and, to a lesser extent, The Master. I remember each PT Anderson film experience in other words... dude has become an event.

Also thought Selma was quite strong. It reminded me very much of Spielberg's Lincoln. Both films tackle giants of American history, but instead of opting for a conventional biopic arc, both films wisely focus on a very specific, yet pivotal moment in their respective leadership careers...the passing of the 13th amendment in Lincoln and the Selma marches and the passing of the Voting Rights Act in Selma. By doing so, each film is able to successfully render their respective icons fully human, including both their personal strengths and flaws. They also skillfully convey the political machinations behind the scenes that are necessary to realize ideals and bring about social change. -
