Yep. Grand Budapest is definitely my favorite film of the year. Rewatch confirms.

Also, @Swizz do you still have that GOAT Christmas playlist on Spotify?

I loooved Winter Sleep. I hadn't been anticipating this as much as some other films, but I was really blown away. Though it received strong reviews at Cannes and won the Palme d'Or, the film's buzz has been relatively quiet since then (unlike last year's Blue is the Warmest Color). It has made some appearances on these end of the year lists, but hasn't quite been a consistent presence. However, I'm definitely with those who rate it very highly.

An epic portrait of a prick with plenty to convey on class dynamics, Ceylan's film is an incredibly rich and nuanced character drama, novelistic in detail, with strong performances all around. Never does the film's runtime feel the least bit oppressive and while the numerous conversations that make up the core of the film often become hyper-articulate, Ceylan fills them with so many delicate touches throughout that the characters and their interactions always feel so fully alive. I'm a big fan overall :emoji_thumbsup:

And though she looked so thoroughly depressed the whole film, Melisa Sozen:emoji_heart:

On another note, I thought it was pretty cool that, after watching a 3-hour plus conversational Turkish drama, my packed theater in New York was so into it that they all clapped as the credits rolled. @irbis

What are some of you Favorite Bad Movies? I mean films that were massacred by critics and/or audiences and you know there's something wrong with it but you like them, call it guilty pleasure if you like. As far as i remember mine would be:

Be Cool (2005) I can't help it, The Rock makes me laugh a lot
    Police Academy (1984)
    Out For Justice (1991)
Big Trouble In Little china (1986) Not sure if this qualifies
    Taken 2
    Home Alone 2

I watch a lot of horror films so there's way too much for me to mention.

@Old_Parr Little China has a 83% on RT.

Don't think anything that is "bad" on purpose should qualify anyway.

I've been exploring Sidney Lumet's filmography a lot recently. 12 Angry Men has always been one of my favorite films ever and The Hill & Murder on the orient express are films from my childhood, but I had never been further. The Offence is incredible, Equus is a masterpiece, Network of course is great and I even loved Find Me Guilty. I feel like Lumet's work is too underrated.

@Zeugma, I Remember i decided to see 12 Angry Men because you said it was good.

@Pinhead, Yeah but i suspect that 83% is nowdays because is now looked as a cult, back when the film came out it wasn't that well recived, in fact John Carpenter said he wouldn't make another mainstream film because he felt heartbroken after the reviews.

    On Another Note

I f---ing LOVED Magic In The Moonlight, i've been pushing it away because it didn't really seemed good and the reviews didn't help either but it was great.

I'm a fanboy, i guess i'll just like everything Allen does from now on. Ok, the script it's a bit silly and perhaps has some cliché elements, but Woody Allen manages to amend those flaws, not to mention the performances by the main actors help a lot. The cinematography makes you feel you are in a Magic environment and by the end of the movie i realized i was in a happy mood, this time i totally let my emotions speak for me and the result was great. Thank you Mr. Allen. 8/10

A commentary both on marriage itself as well as how marriage is affected by social circumstance, The Prefab People is a deeply layered and emotive film that seeks to observe reality in its many different forms.

Here's my review of Bela Tarr's the Prefab People:

Really? I watch it last night and there are just too many cringe worthy moments that I couldn't overlook. Not to mention the multiple times that by some miracle he survives.

I found it somewhat entertaining but poorly done. I do think it is worth a watch because there are some twists and it keeps you wondering.

I didn't "cringe" at all. It was exhilarating and fast paced for the most part, the conceit was beyond interesting/engaging, and majority of the acting was great. Script was also a lot better than you're giving it credit for. Only a few parts were laid on thicker than necessary. I was watching in awe of the fluid directing and there were numerous times where my jaw literally dropped

Wasnt a fan of the ending (like the verrrrry last two minutes after the explosion/wreckage) but even that's whatever

I don't know what you were expecting/what could've possibly been cringeworthy about it

HUGE SPOILERS (tell me how to hide it and i will edit it)

First, the black lady screaming give me some chicken. Then the gutting of the fish before they attack. Then them actually winning the fight against 100s of strong men with axes. Then we all mutually take a break to sing Happy New Year because we are actually all 'buddy-buddy' again? Then the lights going out and them still being able to avoid being slaughtered before coming in with fire like that would even really help them that much. Then there is school going on while the train is being taken over. They sing a song about the train that was just laugh out loud. Then there are machine guns being fired around the children they care about so much. Then people are chilling in saunas and getting their hair done and eating sushi because those things are very important during a revolt. Then a rave. Then they steal everyone's drugs at the rave.

As I'm writing this, I just had a problem with the entire concept of the movie and could not believe the outcome of any scenes, nor the responses from people whose lives are in danger. Are the people in the front oblivious to what is going on in the back of the train? The only purpose of the back of the train is to produce children to run the engine? Where did that kid go in the end? He gets in that vessel and disappears to the engine? Because he wants to? Is he brainwashed? Suddenly the main guy wants to run the train now and forgets about everything he went through?

The sun doesn't melt ice? Anywhere on earth?

I know I'm missing moments too, but it was pretty ridiculous at times.
