Finally caved and wrote my against-common-opinion review of The Revenant.

    [REVIEW] 60/100 - The Revenant (Innaritu, 2015)

Like Birdman before it, this beautifully shot and highly sensationalized film captivates in the moment but disappears into soulless immemory shortly after the curtains close. With each feature film, Innaritu has become more arrogant and mean-spirited, with little love for his characters and even less on screen. For what may appear a humanist tale, the Revenant is far from being humanist. It is Innaritu’s latent sadism become manifest as a perverse, horror-bordering, manipulation of the ego. The men, both white and native, are transformed into blood-lusting savages, an expression of Innaritu’s perverse way of seeing life. The Revenant is not about life or about revenge. It is anti-life and it is anti-human.

War Work: 8 Songs with Film 2014
      ★★★½ Watched 13 Jan, 2016

Either the music is arbitrary or the archival footage is arbitrary. Both are incidental and unoriginal, but come together well.

      75/100 - Very Good.

The Revenant was great. The vision sequences involving Glass's wife are kind of dumb (they don't feel Malick-esque so much as like a Malick parody) and it's also a bit long, could've stood to have about 5 or 10 minutes trimmed out just to keep things flowing, but the film is so well put together and visceral that it's hard to complain. Excellent performances from everyone (especially Tom Hardy.. f--- me he's good) and it's just as thrilling and beautiful and painful as everyone says. For me it's about as high as a B+ can get without becoming an A.

I thought Tom Hardy was pretty good though!

I know everyone is still catching up on 2015, but what are your most anticipated films for 2016? These are the ones that came to mind for me right away...

    Silence (Martin Scorsese)
The Lost City of Z (James Gray)
    Hail, Caesar! (The Coen Brothers)
Knight of Cups (Terrence Malick) and other Untitled Malick Joint
    The Witch (Robert Eggers)
    Personal Shopper (Olivier Assayas)
It's Only the End of the World (Xavier Dolan)
    The Salesman (Asghar Farhadi)
    The Unknown Girl (Dardennes Brothers)
    Everybody Wants Some (Richard Linklater)
Manchester By The Sea (Kenneth Lonergan)

I haven't seen 3, but for me 2>>> 1. I wrote full length reviews of the first two for Next Projection and I gave them 70 and 85 respectively.

A movie about Charles Darwin's time in the Galapagos directed by Terrence Malick. That's the best thing I've ever imagined.

You should post that in its own thread. It's kind of beneath (points noise in air) the usual crowd in here.
