I wasn't a particularly big fan of Snowpiercer (I think it's easily Bong Joon-ho's weakest), but nothing @Howie mentioned bothered me at all. The ax fight, including the fish, was probably my favorite scene in the movie. The movie's setting is fundamentally just a very blunt metaphor. As such, I would deem the logistical details of a civilization within a train in a post-apocalyptic ice age as largely irrelevant.

Seems like i have to add Snowpiercer to my watchlist.

Did you guys see the Shortlist for the Best Foreign Language film? They left some big ones out

Argentina, "Wild Tales," Estonia, "Tangerines," Georgia, "Corn Island," Mauritania, "Timbuktu," Netherlands, Accused,"Poland, "Ida," Russia, "Leviathan," Sweden, "Force Majeure," Venezuela, "The Liberator,"

I'm looking foward Wild Tales, Force Majeure & Leviathan. This has Been a great year for non english films. Out of my Tentative Top 10 for the year, right now 5 of them not in english (Tangerines, Norte,.., Winter Sleep, Liberator [patriotism maybe], Two Days & One Night) wich is alot considering i watch much more English speaking films than anything else.

Liberator will most likely be out of the list, i still have to see a few films that seem good

Should have just said this to begin with. My biggest issue with it was Joon-ho laying the groundwork for a very emotional film and never exploring the potential within that. Can't agree with the rest of your nitpicks as it should be looked at as nothing more than a high concept action film, but there's undoubtedly going to be some inconsistencies in the logic if you look hard enough. I saw two hours of extremely well acted (should be watched for Evans monologue near the end and Tilda Swinton's performance alone) supplemented with some incredible action scenes and visuals. One of the most purely entertaining films of the year, right up with The Guest and Nightcrawler for me.

of course I had questions, which could've been complaints if i thought hard enough @Howie , but not every film needs to have ironclad logic.

It had me hooked within 2 minutes till, pretty much, the end. pretty f---ing great accomplishment if you ask me

Mommy is the big oversight, as it has received consistent critical and commercial acclaim since its release. Next are Jauja, Black Coal Thin Ice, Papusza, Blind Massage, Two Days One Night, etc.

From the nominees, Ida is my favourite, but I wouldn't mind if Winter Sleep, Leviathan, or Force Majeure took it instead. (I have not seen Wild Tales)

@Twan, I love everything about Winter Sleep's formal structure, but I had quite the opposite reaction to its conversational mode. I found certain extended scenes a bit tedious.
@Narshh @OGHowie I enjoyed Snowpiercer for what it is, but found its not so subtle allegory somewhat condescending in practice. It felt a little unintellectual and shallow, and only thinly supported the platform for which the films superb action relies.

Regarding Snowpiercer, I preferred the Bong Joon Ho produced Haemoo (Sea Fog) from this year, though it is flawed in similar manners.

Yea, that's fair. I think a lot of others felt the same, which is probably why it hasn't rated as high as some other films, though it does have its share of supporters (Nick Schager and Scott Tobias are a couple critics I like that ranked Winter Sleep highly). For me, the duration of the conversations was primarily a benefit. I loved the way an offhand line of dialogue or a gesture would reveal something about a character or how an expression would signify that the dynamics of the interaction had shifted. I thought it was just so layered and rich and that the length actually worked to convey that level of detail. It also had a decent sense of humor which helped make the proceedings more palatable.

A couple that I liked that came to mind are Calvary and The Babadook.

For Christmas today, I received one book on the Coen brothers, another book on Martin Scorsese, the Criterion blu-ray of L'Avventura, the Criterion blu-ray set of the three films by Rossellini with Ingrid Bergman, and a DVD of Jessica Chastain's first film, Salome, with Al Pacino. My family knows me so well...:emoji_cry:

Wait, Salome is out there? I've been dying to see that one.

Agreed on Calvary, it was pretty awesome. What about The Double, Joe, Miss Julie, Maps to the Stars, The One I Love, Frank?

The Double is one of my favorites of the year, I Agree on Maps to The Stars & Calvary, i also liked Night Moves. But perhaps the one you need to see the most is Tangerines wich is slept on aparently by everyone here. However, it seems like it's a 2013 film since it was relased on Octuber 2013 in Estonia, i just realized this, it's a candidate for the 2015 award season tho
