X-Men was so disappointing after practically living off the x-men in the 90s. 2 1/2 out of 5

Are you a fan of his other work? The Last Days of Disco is a classic. I want to watch Barcelona soon.

It definitely has both some Days of Heaven and Tree of Life vibes. Days of Heaven because of the settings mostly... there are some landscape shots and cinematography that easily rivals the best in Days of Heaven. And there are some thematic and cinematographic aspects that resemble scenes in Tree of Life, though Distant Voices, Still Lives has much more narratively in common. There is one scene towards the end of Sunset Song, with a group of characters walking to the church, which feels rhythmically, compositionally, and tonally similar to the final segment of Tree of Life with all the characters walking amongst the ethereal landscape.

It's a brilliantly filmed movie with much artistry to offer, but the narrative has a lot of problems, particularly when the husband returns from war duty. The characters are all rather stereotypical and the acting is not entirely believable nor engaging. As an adaptation I don't think it works, and I think Davies should have known better than to try to adapt a story. In my view, cinematography is always compromised by storytelling, and there's a particular form of cinematic storytelling which ought to be created outside of literature. Films like DVST or TOL don't lack a story or narrative but have a story and narrative which befits the medium of cinema, which involves less "wordiness" to suggest and abstract and tell the story through images is how cinema operates. By sticking to the book and trying to hit all plot points it ends up failing to become an accomplished piece of cinema.

    In similar news...

I've become obsessed with Distant Voices, Still Lives, and think it might be a perfectly realized film. I started watching it because I think without a doubt the first 5 minutes are incredible and I ended up watching the whole film again tonight. Haven't done a film twice in a row like this since Elegy of a Voyage or maybe World of Tomorrow since it was so short. I raised my rating to 98/100 and this may still go up.

Who else has seen it and what did you think of it? @Twan @Vahn @Woody
