RIP Anton Yelchin. He was a great young actor with so much more potential, he could have had some more great roles in his future, huge loss.

Watching the TV spots for summer blockbusters during the NBA Finals was pretty disheartening...then I realized Blake Lively fights a shark this Friday, so now hope springs eternal.

Not yet, though I was quite happy with my choice of The Shallows. I'll go Tuesday or Wednesday, before it's abruptly rushed out of theaters.

July looks like a s--- month for movies. This is all I could come up with:

July 1- The BFG (Steven Spielberg)
July 8- Our Little Sister (Hirokazu Koreeda)
July 15- Cafe Society (Woody Allen)
July 22- The Childhood of a Leader (Brady Corbet)

I also saw Neon Demon...I know not what to make of it. Definitely better than Only God Forgives at least.

Some quick thoughts on Neon Demon...

With each subsequent release, Nicolas Winding Refn (or "NWR" as it appears in the opening credits) has become more and more of an exacting visual stylist, with obsessively precise framing and carefully arranged, vivid colors, while at the same time moving further away from conventional character or plot. For much of Neon Demon, it's easy to get lost in the parade of striking images, particularly when coupled with Cliff Martinez's cool, pulsating score. Refn's choice to communicate by primarily visual means is laudable and is perhaps illustrated best by one arresting scene involving a three-way mirror that wordlessly conveys a distinct character shift. However, with Refn's willfully lethargic pacing, after awhile I found myself appreciating the imagery more from a distant remove, not stirred in any particular direction, in spite of the film's mounting provocations. The film overall lacks something of the charge that made films like Drive and Bronson so entertaining.

With that said, Neon Demon is certainly a few notches above Only God Forgives, thanks to a welcome morbid sense of humor and a strong cast, from an ethereal Elle Fanning in the lead to the supporting turns, including a magnetic Jena Malone and an awesomely icy Abbey Lee. By the time the film got to a finale that can be succinctly described as f----- up, I was both shaking my head and laughing, which just might be the exact reaction Refn was going for.
