just saw he went to school with greta gerwig and kate mckinnon???

also finally saw killing of a sacred deer. i rly liked it, its on my top ten this yr - but the fact it shared a premise with "the box" (from xx) rly bothered me.

@Papa Andy Cool list! Though I wasn't especially high on the movie, I like the bold choice of Detroit...I haven't seen it pop up on too many of these lists. KStew for Best Actress warms my heart. What did you think of Lady Bird (I see you have it in Best Director but not in the top 10.)?

On a related note, Slant posted its list for best films of 2017 today. As always, it's much more interesting than most.

    1. The Phantom Thread
    2. A Quiet Passion
    3. Nocturama
    4. Lady Bird
    5. Good Time
    6. Personal Shopper
    7. The Lost City of Z
    8. BPM (Beats Per Minute)
    9. Dawson City: Frozen Time
    10. Call Me by Your Name
    11. Ex-Libris: New York Public Library
    12. Get Out
    13. Faces Places
    14. The Death of Louis XIV
    15. I Am Not Your Negro
    16. The Florida Project
    17. Tempestad
    18. Starless Dreams
    19. The Salesman
    20. Marjorie Prime
    21. Behemoth
    22. Song to Song
    23. The Ornithologist
    24. Mudbound
    25. The Meyerowitz Stories

    My current ranking for 2017

    https://letterboxd.com/kamahmed/list/2017-ranked/

    Top 10:
    Song to Song
On the Beach at Night Alone
    The Square
    Lost City of Z
    Good TIme
    Luk'Luk'I
    Prototype
    The Florida Project
    Killing of a Sacred Deer
    Logan

*if including Twin Peaks: The Return, it would be competing for first with Song to Song, but likely a slight notch above.

I went to high school(he was 4 years older but we had a real good film program at our school so anyone who took film knew each other) at the same time as the director of Luk'Luk'l. Might even have some of his old s--- on year end DVDs. I'm excited to see the film

Side note: it is weird to me that he's like got a new last name and s--- cuz there's no way in a zillion years you would know he was native. But that's just me being salty because I was one of like 20 (we had exchange students that would come in and out) not visibly white kids(I'm native) at the school. But I'm proud that someone is pushin native film and it's someone I know.

Yeah, I think the reception to Detroit is a little surprising. as i recently said to @WPG, i thought it's grime and messiness were a perfect fit given the subject matter. no film experience this year has been more harrowing. visceral, nasty work.

by flip side, i thought Lady Bird was... fine. again as i said to pall, it's not nearly as insufferable as, say, juno...... but i found it just a touch too cute. (and this coming from a person who went to a catholic school in 2002, and has a good friend who. was. lady bird.) i much preferred the more-resonant Edge of Seventeen last year. just wary, each year our imaginations are captured by these charmingly bratty female protagonists and their quaint coming of age stories. feel disposable. that said, i dont especially see film=director ballot in sync necessarily, and wanted an all female lineup for political reasons (i submitted this to the boston online critics group im a member of).

anyways, saw Last Jedi last night. wow. it's unlike any star wars film i've seen. here's my tweet, just to give u a taste for its themes:

Surprised mother! hasn't received more love. Especially after the latest slew of sexual assault allegations.

i didnt lol. i mean, look, it perhaps would've worked better as a hbo miniseries ill grant u.... but this was a snapshot of a city burning, true horror pandemonium.... so its doing alot in 143 minutes. nevertheless, jason mitchell made my supporting actor ballot, and will poulter narrowly missed it. larry reed's storyline was heartbreaking, and rly landed the overall goings on...especially when you realize his group later recorded with snoop dogg lol.

only thing that didnt quite sit with me was the presence of Jim Halbert... and even then, they utilized his smugness to good affect.

meanwhile heres my top ten tv shows of the yr. i recommend u all rt this. especially u paul i want that vulture $ ffs
