LOL, I get that, but I'm a sucker for David O'Russell's music choices (Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Beatles, Elton John, Duke Ellington, etc.) Also the acting is so captivating even if the plot leaves much to be desired.

I have Boy Meets Girl above Lovers but I think my memory of Lovers is fonder than Boy... so might be on your side now

In case you're interested in a frame of reference, Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, Alex Ross Perry's biggest fan, gave Queen of Earth a B+ in comparison to the A that he gave Listen Up Philip.

Haven't read his piece yet but I liked Queen of Earth more than Listen Up Philip personally, I can understand why he'd prefer Philip though, they are quite different works.

Having just seen it tonight, I think I lean more towards Vishnevetsky at the moment, though I do dig Queen of Earth quite a bit.

Despite what initially comes across as melodramatic, the film ultimately utilizes a horror movie aesthetic that includes a heavy, ominous score, dreamy fades and transitions, slow zooms and Shining-esque day of the week titles. Right from the outset, it thus feels like violence might potentially erupt at any moment. However, the only violence that does occur is of the emotional variety. In Perry's chamber piece, his two protagonists cut into one another with words both in the present and in flashback, with the lake house providing a culmination of deeply held bitterness and jealousy, clearly harbored over a long period of friendship.

After my first viewing, my main hesitation with the film is that it feels more like Alex Ross Perry's take on a genre rather than a truly penetrating look into depression and mental breakdown. The genre here is the "woman come undone" genre that includes everything from Polanski's Repulsion to Allen's Interiors. Perry does craft an impressive entry into this sub-genre, but I often found myself struggling to find my way into the characters. With that said, this isn't to suggest that Elizabeth Moss' wholly committed performance is anything less than towering.

Together with Perry, she fully realizes her character's downward spiral and does tangibly convey the feelings of self-obsession and paranoia that come with depression. My favorite scene in the movie is the unbroken take centerpiece that shifts between Moss and Waterston as each details stories of failed relationships, with the camera capturing their alternating deliveries and reactions. It's an incredibly revealing scene, one masterfully performed and directed, and it's the movie at its mostly deeply felt and resonant.

In all fairness, I am interested in seeing The Visit. A smaller, $5 million picture would be kind of cool.
Pairing up with Joaquian as opposed to Jaden Smith is certainly how you start a comeback..

Antonioni's Red Desert has stunning visuals and an amazing performance by the lead actress who looked very beautiful the entire time. The rest i didn't cared too much for as the film never fully caught my attention
