@Narsh that opinion literally makes zero sense. martian is like gravity + interstellar but without the pretense (interstellar) or emotionalism (gravity). how could you overrate interstellar to the point where its top three nolan (no way thats true btw... its arguably his worst besides maybe tdkr), but dislike gravity?

I think I've watched it more than any other film this decade tbh. It's really just a personal opinion, I think that's pretty much as dope as cinema gets.

    1.) The Tree of Life
    2.) Spring Breakers
    3.) Boyhood
    4.) The Master
    5.) To the Wonder
    6.) Before Midnight
    7.) Drive
    8.) The Act of Killing
    9.) The Assassin
    10.) Mad Max: Fury Road
11.) The Place Beyond the Pines
    12.) Mommy
    13.) The Social Network
    14.) Shame
    15.) Under the Skin

Honorable mentions: Samsara, Cosmopolis, Only God Forgives, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Her, Post Tenebras Lux, Interstellar

The Look of Silence is finally online so I expect that to creep in here somewhere over the next couple of days. Holy Motors gonna be re-watched.

Spring Breakers is one of the best examples of a film's cinematography, score, and editing all working in unison with each other to reach visual metaphor. It's ridiculously layered, dripping with surrealism at any given point, and incredibly spiritual. Ten watches in, and each time I'm recognizing new scenes of foreshadowing, editing synchronizations (that people wrongly think of as repetition), and dialogue to latch myself onto on a personal level.

It's an experienced film that strives for vibe, thematic contemplation, and personal reflection. Sure, it might not be better than The Godfather if you're grading on some objective rubric that prioritizes acting, production design, etc, but that hardly matters. I try to rate based on what a film accomplishes in its chosen creative space, and I really feel like Spring Breakers accomplishes every single thing it sets out to do.

    #14 all time.

its a very cinematic film, yeah. but korine is a borderline hack hiding behind his indie prankster rep-- im not denying both you and @Narsh enjoy springbreakers... i did too. but to put it in the ranks -- or above -- the vertigos of the world? to me, youre wearing generational blinders... mtv generation who thinks b/w films are boring

cry/laugh all you want, you both just seem to me like youre inserious or naive

welp time for a spring breakers rewatch

i remember you like place beyond the pines a lot, didnt think it would have this much staying power for u though, nice.
im really only laughing @ u saying interstellar is basically tied for worst in Nolan's discog.

I couldnt connect with Gravity on an emotional level. And definitely not nearly as much as I did with Interstellar. Not to mention MM's acting was far more gripping for me than anyone else involved in the discussion.

also, my dismissal of the martian wasnt meant to be a slight on its quality...im just saying based off trailers i wasnt keeping an eye out for it. i was content joking about how they took damon's interstellar subplot and made an entire film lol. But i know the reviews have been great.

Foh. You always think you're cool because you've watched older films, do you honestly think i haven't seen the films you're mentioning? You just constantly regurgitate the accepted film criticism consensus and never have any interesting or unique opinions to offer. I wouldn't have a problem with that if you didn't constantly try to act like you're better and put people down for voicing opinions that praise polarizing films. Your film knowledge isn't that impressive, get over yourself bruh.

no i get that, and im not denying it works on some level... just to me, it seems to be resonating with you guys on a much deeper level then me... it seems like a good subversive commentary that tells its story to ur point on a few levels. but its not a rubric issues a la godfather or whatever you were saying... its more about impact (on me as a viewer, and to cinema as a whole) then anything

i saw plenty of films in film school like spring breakers. you guys can wax about it about how it strives for thematic contemplation or whatever... just reads like purple prose to me tbh tho
