Yeah, Carol is amazing, i want to see it again. I like it much more than The Immigrant. Both actresses were great, however, Cate Blanchett was my favorite but i might be in the minority in this.

I would say believe the Hype @Twan, Carol is already one of my favorite films of the decade. People in the cinema including @Vahn applauded when it ended. I'm finally seeing cool stuff at theatres :emoji_thumbsup:

I've watched eight of Polanski's pictures and enjoyed every one of them, Repulsion and Chinatown particularly. I've yet to watch a Polish film that I didn't enjoy, and I haven't even tackled Wajda or Kieslowski yet. Feels good man.

Aren't most of those usually $20 on Amazon? Am I missing something?

Speaking of Wajda, I watched Ashes and Diamonds for the first time last week...Martin Scorsese and @FilmAndWhisky are right...it's a masterpiece.

As for new stuff, I saw Spotlight this week, which was a solid investigative procedural in the vein of All the President's Men. A mature adult drama, it's incredibly well paced with strong performances from both its principal actors as well as from its extensive supporting cast. For the most part, it avoids the histrionics characteristic of fall movie season, instead keeping a sharp focus on the investigative process. It thoughtfully depicts how so many were complicit in allowing for such crimes to happen, even if some weren't aware of what they were turning a blind eye towards. If I have any hesitations, it's that its narrow scope perhaps leaves something to be a desired as cinema (primarily just shots of people standing and talking or walking and talking), and its information-centric approach leaves the main characters somewhat underdeveloped, though the actors do their best to provide shades of depth.

Also saw Brooklyn, which is corny and obvious, but so f---ing sweet that it was hard not to give in to its melodramatic charms. Saoirse Ronan kills it.

I agree with this, although I think that the hesitation you list is perhaps a limitation of gauging films on how successful they are cinematically speaking. (to me, what's wonderful about films are they can 100% work on their own terms) still, to your point ive heard some people say spotlight is a great made for tv procedural. nevertheless, living in boston (and in fact, my boss is referenced in the film/thanked in the credits), it's absolutely an accurate, compelling, competent portrayal of the investigation, and what the culture here is like. it feels lived in, and geographically accurate.

one of my issues was ruffalo's two ~showboat scenes... he was just a touch too hammy. i felt keaton's arc was wonderfully subtle and impactful. to your point, overall the film avoids the usual trappings and tells a gripping story of journalists before the internet wave crashed

I also watched Spotlight. Didn't say much about it... but you can prob sum my view up from the one sentence/twitter

      Spotlight 2015
      ★★★★ Watched 15 Nov, 2015

A flawlessly narrated but cinematically unremarkable demonstration of investigative journalism.

      80/100 - Great.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 1984
      ★★★½ Watched 11 Nov, 2015

Exceptional genre piece w/ a provocative transformation of dream to reality. Horror both real and psychological.

      79/100 - Very Good.
